Questions answered

Who can be a Social Impact host?
Social impact hosts can be staff, board members, contractors, volunteers, or supporters of an NGO/nonprofit. They have real expertise in the work of the nonprofit and the consent of the organisation to host.
What kind of organisation is eligible to host a Social Impact Experience?
The organisation itself must be a registered NGO/nonprofit as defined by our validation partner TechSoup, and be validated through the TechSoup portal.

Who is not eligible to host a Social Impact experience?
• Religious or belief organisations, except when the activities being sponsored are non-sectarian, such as soup kitchens or shelters, and are open to all faiths.
• Organisations that discriminate or have exclusionary practises on the basis of religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other issues of diversity, even if this could be permitted by local laws.
• Political or lobbying organisations, fraternities/sororities and certain advocacy and mutual benefit organizations.

Does Airbnb charge a fee?
Not for Social Impact experience hosts. Airbnb waives its 20% fee for validated nonprofit hosts. That means 100% of the proceeds raised from the experience go directly to your organization’s bank account.
How often should I be hosting?
Experiences are meant to be recurring, on-going activities that locals and travellers can book. Since you will have have total flexibility and ownership over your calendar availability, you can decide how often you’d like to host.

Some Social Impact hosts host 3x a week, whereas others host twice a month. We recommend hosting on a least once a week to give you more opportunities to connect with the Airbnb community. The more dates you have available, the more guests will see you when searching on the platform.

As more dates means more likelihood of visibility, we do not recommend one-off experiences or events as a Social Impact experience.
Can there be more than one host for my experience?
Yes. To be eligible, every person who hosts or helps host an experience must have an Airbnb account, and must be mentioned by name in the "About you" section. It's against Airbnb's policies for multiple hosts unless they follow the rules above.
Do I need to offer an Airbnb home to host an Airbnb experience?
Not at all. Airbnb experiences and Airbnb Homes are separate offerings. Experience hosts are able to share their passions and become an ambassador for their city without having to host in their home.

In terms of Experience guests, they do not need to be staying in a Home to book an Experience. Many Experiences guests happen to be travellers staying in Airbnb listings, but we are also seeing local guests as a way to deepen ties in the community and make local connections.
How does the nonprofit get paid?
Since Social Impact hosts receive 100% of proceeds generated by the experience, the host will have to connect the nonprofit's bank account directly to the Airbnb account that they are hosting on.

That means you will need to create a new Airbnb account using your nonprofit e-mail address and add the nonprofit’s bank account as a payout method.

Twenty-four hours after your experience is completed, you will receive the payout in your preferred method.
Why does Airbnb have a social impact programme?
Airbnb mission is to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. We feel that one of the most impactful ways to get to know new place and make connections there is to understand the issues that locals care about. Working with NGOs/nonprofits allows us to further our mission by diversifying the experiences on our platform while creating a positive impact in communities.
