Airbnb Enhanced Clean

There’s a new standard of clean on Airbnb. Discover places to stay that have committed to following our expert-backed cleaning process.

A host commitment to safety

More than ever, the health and wellbeing of our community is a top priority. Hosts around the world* will be required to commit to Airbnb’s five-step enhanced cleaning process.

Backed by experts

The five-step process is based on Airbnb’s cleaning handbook, which has been developed in partnership with former US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy and backed by global health and hospitality experts.

Not just cleaned – sanitised

An enhanced clean means going beyond your basic clean to sanitise your space according to industry-leading standards.

Away from crowds

Enjoy the privacy of a home away from home, away from large crowds and high turnovers. Our COVID-19 safety practices include social distancing requirements to help keep you safely distanced, whether you’re in a private home or private room.

Look for the sparkle

Find hosts that have committed to our five-step cleaning process – just look for Enhanced Clean at the top of their listing. For more details on what hosts are committing to cleaning, click here.

Masks and gloves

Safety comes first. Hosts and their cleaners are advised to wear personal protective equipment while cleaning.

Approved disinfectants

Hosts should use disinfectants that are approved by local regulatory agencies to attack bacteria, germs, and viruses.

High-touch surfaces

All surfaces, especially those frequently touched, should be cleaned and sanitised with disinfectant.

Our global health advisors

Airbnb has developed the five-step enhanced cleaning process in consultation with former US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy, and based on guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization (WHO). Hosts should consult and follow all local guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

How are these cleaning standards being updated as new guidance is released?

Airbnb will continue working with our expert advisors and closely monitor new findings from global health organisations, updating our policies accordingly.

How do I know if my host has committed to the five-step cleaning process?

Hosts who commit to the enhanced cleaning process will have a callout on their listing – just look for the sparkle icon. For more details on the rigorous, five-step cleaning process that hosts are committing to, check out this article.

What if I’m a host?

As a host, committing to the five-step enhanced cleaning process helps you prepare for the future of travel, offers peace of mind to guests, and shows the community that you take cleanliness seriously. Beginning on 20 November, all hosts will be required to commit to our new COVID-19 safety and cleaning practices, otherwise their accounts may be subject to warnings, suspensions and, in some cases, removal from the Airbnb platform. Hosts should refer to Airbnb’s cleaning handbook, which has detailed best practices for how to implement the five-step cleaning process, and consult and follow all local guidelines. What other health and safety guidelines have been created to keep travellers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Going beyond cleaning, we’ve created new guidelines for both hosts and travellers to uphold, based on guidance from the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

All hosts and guests must:

  • Wear a mask. If hosts and guests must interact or if there is a shared common area accessible to individuals outside of your reservation, wear a protective face covering at all times as recommended by regulatory agencies or authorities.
  • When you are in a common area or shared space (as a host or guest), maintain appropriate distance from anyone who's not part of your reservation at all times.

  • In addition, we recommend the following precautions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Don’t host or travel if you’ve been exposed to or are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

  • Be sure to follow any local laws or guidelines in your area. For more information, check out this article in our Help Centre.
