Top-rated things to do in Dalawella Beach

Unique activities hosted by local experts vetted for quality

  • Guided Walking Tour of Galle Fort
Your host will meet you at the entrance to the Fort at 08:00 AM / 4:30 PM. Your host is a local and his masterful knowledge of the town and its history will show you the layers below the colorful beauty of Galle. The Dutch Fort of Galle has been an icon since 1400 BC. At the start, it was famous for cinnamon exportation. The Portuguese made Galle their headquarters on arrival and destroyed many important monuments which were in the area. The initial earth and palisade fort built by the Portuguese was later expanded on by the Dutch. The Dutch Fort was intricately designed with high stone ramparts and bastions. Buildings for administration and residency renovated streets and added advancements such as stormwater drains were added to the complex. Today much of the Dutch fort still stands. You will be able to climb the ramparts of the fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walk through the streets. Your host will also take you to museums filled with antiquities of old. You will also visit the British-built Galle lighthouse. Enjoy a cup of fine Ceylon Tea or a drink of King Coconut milk along the way. Your walk will be completed back at the Dutch Fort at 10:30 AM / 6:00 PM. Other things to note Once you meet us your guide will conduct the tour in the best routes while sharing valuable information.

  • Visit to the Foundation of Goodness
The guided tour of the Foundation of Goodness is a great way to learn about the real experiences of rural Sri Lankans and all the work that goes into developing and uplifting a community to bridge the rural and urban gap, as well as the unique story of how the organization was able to rebuild both itself and the village in the devastating aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami which decimated the entire region. I will meet you at the lobby of the "OYOB Centre of Excellence" at the Foundation of Goodness in Seenigama, where you can witness first-hand the watermark left behind by the colossal wave, close to the ceiling of our building. The tour will take you through our centre, visiting various empowerment sectors including the Women’s Enterprise Centre, IT Centre, Business Skills & Language Training Centre, Pre-school and the medical and dental clinics all operated free of cost. Then we will proceed to our Dive for Good - Scuba Diving Centre and Sports Academy to learn more about the support we have received from cricketing celebrities and other big names in international sports who have contributed in a variety of ways towards building this model of empowerment which has now been replicated island-wide, reaching 28,000 beneficiaries from 500+ villages every year. Other things to note Please note that it is a non-smoking environment.

  • Plates of Goodness - holistic cooking
Upon arrival at the Foundation of Goodness premises in Seenigama, you'll be given a brief introduction. We'd love to take you on a short tour of our empowerment sectors and the story behind it as Sri Lanka's only one of a kind holistic rural model to empower disadvantaged communities! You'll head towards our Sports Academy or the Village Heartbeat Empowerment sector, both of which are closely located to our main premises. Then you'll man the cooking station and learn to cook traditional village rice & curry with me. You have the option to get assistance in preparing dishes if you would like to do so, or you can sit back and enjoy the lessons. At the end of the session, you'll enjoy prepared lunch in a relaxed outdoor setting. A recipe leaflet will be provided, to try it out back home with your loved ones. Duration of the cooking class would be 2-3 hours. Other things to note Please refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol at the premises.
