Hi I'm Rob, I've been teaching about China for over a decade in college and high school, and I lived and taught in China 2016-18. Exploring the streets of Chinatown is a great way to get in touch with the unique history of Chinese Americans. We'll criscross the streets of Chinatown together, stopping at unique, special places that show its dynamic, multifaceted past and the struggles and resilience of its residents over more than 100 years. There are many cafes, bakeries, and restaurants if you want to try foods and we can even stop a few minutes to sit down for a bit or drink if you want. Bring your walking shoes, we will be doing a good amount of walking. Boston can be very hot and sunny in summer so dress accordingly.

Places we'll explore include Chinatown Gate & Mary Soo Hoo Park where residents play Chinese chess; Quong Kow school; the Chinese community associations; the forgotten back alley where a tent city started Chinatown; streets where gang wars broke out; the infamous Combat Zone; the Theater & Garment Districts; the modern developments of South Cove and Tai Tung Village; many restaurants - family-owned and chains from China; and Josiah Quincy School
