What you'll do

Would you like to try the exquisite street food of Mexico City and delight yourself with the most authentic flavors?

We will begin this experience getting into the city subway, where you will learn how public transport works in this chaotic city. We will move to one of the most traditional markets in Mexico City and you will understand the importance of these places within street food. While we walk through its colorful corridors where fruits, vegetables and flowers from all over Mexico abound, we will make different stops and you will taste a unique version of tamales, some appetizers and of course, tacos.

Later we will take the subway again and move to the “heart of the city”, the Zócalo. As we walk through the streets of the Historical Center, we will make stops at different street food stalls where you will learn about the history and preparation of some Mexican snacks, as well as iconic tacos of the city.

Later we will visit an unmissable market, known for offering exotic products where you will taste a sample of edible insects from different regions of Mexico. Finally, we will visit the place that made churros famous in Mexico and you will undoubtedly taste the best churros in the country. At the end of the experience, we can go back to the meeting point.

During the whole tour, you will try 11 different street food tastings. Please consider that some stops are essential and unfortunately don't offer vegetarian or vegan options. Drinks are not included.

Hello travellers! My name is John, I’m a certified tour guide and I have lived in the Historical Center of Mexico City for more than 25 years. I’m a passionate traveler and I love to learn about each place from a local perspective, taste the food made for locals, move by public transportation or visit places hardly visited ordinary tourists.

On my experience as a traveler, the opportunities to find authentic places are very limited. For that reason I decided to become a host and create unique experiences, to show the travelers like me the real places where the locals eat in Mexico City, my favourite street food stalls and the variety of dishes that can be found on the streets.

Where you'll be

We will meet at the main door of the Museo Nacional de Arte (a.k.a. MUNAL) located in Plaza Manuel Tolsá. During this tour we will visit street food stalls located within traditional markets and at the streets of the Historical Center. At the end of the experience, we will return to the meeting point if you wish.

This experience was one of our favorites from the ones we’ve taken during our time in Mexico. John is very knowledgeable and taught us a lot beyond street food. Everything we ate was so tasty. We really had a lot of fun. I’d recommend this to anyone visiting the city.

I had such a great time! We tried so many different kinds of foods, and we did plenty of walking in between, so I never felt overly full. I now feel so much more comfortable approaching street food stands and feel like I know what to do. It was also great learning how to use the metro. It was interesting learning about and seeing the insects, even if I don’t want to eat them. I learned so much about food specific to Mexico City and feel that I now have special insight to better help me understand the local food culture. This is a fun day out. I highly recommend it.

You must go to this! You will learn so much about the culture of Mexico City!!! If you don’t have an Airbnb or hotel in the museum area then this is your chance to spend a day eating and learning and afterwards you can just roam around. John is an amazing guide! Not only did we learn about this city but we also spoke to him about where we come from and how our cities differ or compare. It was only me and my boyfriend on the tour so it felt like we were getting more one on one time with John. Be ready to immerse yourself and do as the people do!

We had a great time on this food tour. John definitely took us off the beaten path to try some real, authentic Mexican food and offered so many great tidbits and facts throughout. He really is quite knowledgeable about Mexican food and history. We thoroughly enjoyed the al pastor tacos and of course the churros :) Be sure to wear comfortable shoes you aren’t worried about getting a little dirty. You will be making your way through marketplaces that sell all sorts of groceries, meats, flowers, and more!
