What you'll do

On arrival at the forge you will be shown examples of the items you can make during the day. On average, two to three pieces are achievable during the time.
After a health and safety talk, I will explain the working of the coke forge hearth before demonstrating the techniques you will be learning; including heating your work and hammering techniques.
Then it'll be your turn to start making your first piece.
Once the first item is made and you have a feel for the processes, you can decide what your next piece will be and get on with making it.
Other things to note
All aspects of health and safety will be covered and I will be with you for the day but stepping into a forge is a hazardous venture and common sense must be used.
For the best results, two students are all I can accommodate in my workshop

I have been working as a sculptural blacksmith for over thirteen years. Mainly working to commission, I make as various a range of items as this versatile material allows and am passionate about all stages of creating projects both large and small.
In running day courses in basic blacksmithing, I am able to give students (ages 14+) the opportunity to come to a working forge and experience hammering hot steel into their own functional and/or sculptural forms.
I absolutely love working with this versatile medium and am sure you will also!
During your day at the forge, you will learn to manage the heating of metal in a forge hearth, along with swinging the hammer at the anvil to coax the steel into its desired form!
Come and experience blacksmithing for the day. I look forward to welcoming you.

Where you'll be

The workshop will take place at my forge, a unit on a farm set on a hill in the scenic Chilterns, Oxfordshire. However, don't think you'll have a chance to sit and enjoy the view, you'll be hard at work at the anvil!

I gave this day out to my son’s girlfriend as a Xmas present. It is a creative and hands on experience and she thoroughly enjoyed it - coming home with a newfound admiration for the art of blacksmithing. Julie is welcoming and friendly and was easy to communicate with. I would recommend this day for anyone interested in traditional crafts and who is not afraid of getting their hands dirty!
