What you'll do

We offer an inspirational "off-the-beaten-track" experience of Nairobi, guided by youth from slums who raised themselves on the streets of Nairobi City Centre. During a personal, one-on-one, 3-hours walking tour in Downtown, you will experience the city centre through the eyes of street children. Get the real insights into their way of life, get captivated by their life stories and ghetto-energy, learn from their street skills, ask all your questions, shop at local markets, bargain with your guides to pay a local price, eat street food, have tea with mechanics, see street art among and last but not least become friends with them.

Social Impact: By booking a Nai Nami Tour you give disadvantaged youth from slums an opportunity to earn a regular income and inspire them as a role model.
Other things to note
Carry your passport copy and wear good shoes (no sandals or high heels), it's a walking tour!

We are Kissmart, Cheddaz and Donga, former street children and youth from the Mathare slum. With the aim to give youth like us a future in life, we founded the social enterprise Nai Nami. We build on street skills and life stories of former street children who don't have school certificates to give them a future in life as storytelling guides in Nairobi.

Where you'll be

We will take you through the bustling streets of Downtown in the city centre, which used to be our former home. It is a vibrant place where local people do business, shop at hidden markets, eat at Kibandas and enjoy the authentic Nairobi life. Each street has its own stories and secrets, which we will share with you.

I loved this tour as it was very personal and inspiring! Even though I was super late to arrive, they still welcomed me with a smile and proceeded with taking me through the streets and sharing their life stories with an open heart. The guys were also super attentive and I felt safe at all times. Highly recommend!!

My friends and I booked this experience because we travel a lot and don’t ever want to do a “standard” tour with a bunch of tourists…we want to experience life as a local. In that respect, this tour was perfect. I know they don’t always do it this way, but we went during the lull after COVID and there was one of them for each of us so we had a lot of personal attention and they kept switching it up so we got time with everyone. It was so amazing walking through the streets with these guys because it seems like everyone knows them and the people you run into treat you like you’re friends. Imagine being the popular kid in downtown Kenya! We learned slang, we learned what it was like in the slums of Nairobi years ago and how it’s changed, we met street vendors, waitresses, and business owners. I really did feel like we made friends and that most of the tour was spent sharing stories…of them growing up in Kenya and of us and our travels. They invited us to meet up the next day to watch the local football team play and then go on to a reggae festival…not your standard tour! I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to see the real Nairobi.

Really interesting learning about life on the streets for children and young adults from the ‘street kids’ themselves. Super nice guys as well, there company is very welcome. Would be interesting to hear a female perspective as well some day , as I understand they have female guides as well, and the stories I imagine would be very different.

This was one of the most incredibly insightful tours we have ever experienced. It was almost like being transported into another world. We had the privilege of meeting 5 of the organizers of this group, words can not describe the absolutely unbelievable stories that they so kindly and openly shared with us. We got a true insight to what they have experienced in their lives. The tour took us through some of the poorest neighborhoods of Nairobi, we felt completely safe and well protected every moment of our tour. Each and every one of our guides made sure that we were comfortable and felt safe. We feel absolutely privileged to have had this experience. It puts life into a completely different perspective. The streets, the people, the smells, the poverty, hard to grasp that this exists in the world today. Thank you so much to our unbelievable guides that enabled us to experience what we did today. This tour is an ABSOLUTE must when visiting Nairobi.
