What you'll do

The tour concentrates on the devastating Battle of Berlin which occurred in April/May 1945. The battle was very much the dramatic conclusion of the entire Second World War in Europe, but also played a huge part in the post-war situation of Berlin, including its division into East and West.

The tour takes you through central Berlin - known as 'Z Sector' during the battle - where we will see many of the major sites and learn what they experienced during the battle, the war in general and the aftermath. Additionally, I will show how the city recovered, changed and became the city that would epitomise the Cold War. Although the tour is focused on the battle, I will also show sites associated with the Nazi period in general as well as the Berlin Wall. We visit some major spots along the way, such as:

Brandenburg Gate
Museum Island
The Reichstag
The Holocaust Memorial
Luftwaffe HQ
SS HQ
Bebelplatz
The Fuhrerbunker

The entire tour will be punctuated with photos taken of Berlin in from the battle and earlier, allowing the guest to see how the city was devastated, but also how it recovered.

Please provide your own transport to the start location (it is well served by public transport). This is primarily a walking tour, so good practical shoes will help.

Please be aware that with larger groups the tour can sometimes finish later. I will keep you updated as we go.

Born in England, I moved to Berlin around 9 years ago. I have always been obsessed with history, eventually studying a BA in History and Politics and a Masters in Strategic Studies. More than anything, I simply love to talk about history, especially regarding my favourite city. I have now been providing tours of Berlin, and Germany in general, for around 4 years. I'm pleased to say I think I've found my calling in life!

In particular I have been running tours based on the climatic Battle of Berlin which took place across the city in 1945 and signaled the end of the war in Europe. In addition, for the past year I have contributed as a researcher to the popular Youtube history channel, the Great War.

Really great tour through central Berlin - Mark cleverly & effectively uses photos and stories to really bring WW2 history to life. Mark himself was really friendly and approachable.

Extremely thorough, Mark had fantastic knowledge of the Battle of Berlin. He’s very friendly and easy to chat to between stops! You won’t find a more detailed history tour, he explains everything really well so no prior knowledge needed! Thank you!

Mark is very knowledgeable on the subject. I have some basic understanding of this period, and it was great (in Mark's words) to "nerd out" on the subject. Mark takes his time to answer every question. As a bonus he knows some great places to get some nice Berliner streetfood, so do not, I repeat, do NOT take your home made sandwiches with you. Cheers!
