Meet the chickens at a smallholding

Highland, United Kingdom

Experience hosted by Marie

Hosted in German, English

What you'll do

When you arrive Mairi will greet you with a cup of tea or coffee and some homemade cake. We'll have this either outside in the garden, or, if the weather is bad, inside one of the growhouses.

We'll then head out into the garden to meet the chickens. We currently have 10 chickens (9 of which are rescues), and they free-range around our large garden all day. They are friendly, and enjoy being stroked and picked up. We'll tell you a little bit about the smallholding that the chickens are part of, and we'll spend some time watching them and learning about how they spend their days. You'll be able to feed them chicken food and treats (they love frozen corn!), and we'll teach you how to pick them up and hold them. You'll also have the opportunity to hunt for eggs, and you're welcome to keep any eggs you find.

You might also meet our other pets - we have 3 ducks and 4 cats, and if you'd like you can also meet our bouncy dogs Archie (a bearded collie) and Lulu (a dalmatian).
Other things to note
Children under 12 do not need a ticket but can attend with an accompanying adult. Please message us to let us know they'll be coming along.

Please contact us if you'd like to do this experience on another day or at a different time.

I'm Mairi, a smallholder who moved to the Highlands in 2012. I am the founder of 'Highland Seedlings', and grow the vast majority of our the food I eat myself along with my husband Seamus. I also keep chickens and ducks, and I sell vegetable seedlings and help others set up their own vegetable garden. I am passionate about gardening organically and in harmony with nature, and with as little effort, time and money as possible (we don't dig here at 'Highland Seedlings'!). I love nothing more than getting folks excited about growing their own food! As a former academic learning and teaching are second-nature to me, and I am also well versed in accommodating any support needs you might have as I myself am disabled with chronic conditions.

Where you'll be

The experience takes place in the 1/3 acre 'no dig' smallholding in Fearn in beautiful Easter Ross, about 45 minutes north of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. We will spend time outside but can move to one of the polytunnels if it rains. We have been turning our garden into a smallholding since 2013, and we currently keep ducks and chickens and grow loads of fruit and veg.

What a fun experience! I came here with my toddler and we were welcomed with such warmth! The little farm here and the chickens & ducks are so cute! We even got a walk through the garden & had a sampling of growing veggies! Marie is very sweet & even gave us recommendations on where to go around the Highlands. She is a wealth of knowledge!

The chicken meet and greet was the highlight of our whole trip to Scotland! My husband and I had so much fun meeting the Chickens (and ducks!), feeding them, getting chicken cuddles, leading them on a mini excursion around the small holding, and hearing stories about their lives and adventures. Mairi was such a lovely, friendly host, and we greatly appreciated the hot drinks and freshly baked cake (using apples that they had grown themselves!) that she provided on the chilly day. Next time we’re up that way again, we’ll be sure to make a second visit! Thank you so much for such a lovely experience :)

My son loves chickens and wanted an opportunity to learn more about them and interact with them. This experience was perfect. Marie told us all about the chickens, answered our questions, introduced us to the brood and then allowed us to feed and hold them (with the chicken's permission, of course)! My son said the experience was "absolutely amazing" and Marie really made the effort to make us feel welcome. Tea and freshly made apple muffins were a really yummy added bonus!!

We had a really wonderful time meeting the chickens! It was a really special experience for two city dwellers who don’t have as much contact with nature as they would like. We got lots of cool info and guidance on small holdings, plus we got to meet the dogs!

We had a fantastic time visiting Marie. She made us feel so welcome and at ease. Her garden is beautiful and so are her animals. Our three year old daughter could not have asked for a better afternoon spent making new friends with both animal and human alike. Would love to go back and visit again and again :)

We enjoyed visiting Marie's garden and meeting her chickens. It's a lovely place. We were lucky to be there at a time when the numerous apple trees were ready for harvest.
