What you'll do

I love the sculpture of Aegina artist Christos Kapralos and I want to share it with you! Together, we’ll visit his museum/gallery and then go beach combing and make our own ‘beach junk’ sculptures with what we find, inspired by what we’ve seen and talked about.
We’ll meet at the Kapralos Museum and spend about an hour there - I will bring sketch books & pencils for you. We’ll look at his work together, and we’ll chat about why it excites me, its relationship with the landscapes and seascapes of Aegina, and your own ideas for beach sculptures.
From there, we will go on a short walk along the nearby coast to collect ’beach junk’ and some of the same sorts of materials that Kapralos used. We’ll talk as we walk, sharing our ideas. Then, you will begin to make your own ‘beach junk’ sculpture(s), with your found objects & other materials. There will be time to try out a few different things, with my support. At the end of the day, you’ll take your ideas home with you - and you can take your work too, or leave it to blend back into the landscape...
You don’t need to be an ‘artist’ or have particular skills to enjoy this experience. Together we will play, experiment, create and spend some time exploring materials, shapes, lines, textures, feelings and ideas - experiencing for yourself the environment & inspiration that Kapralos and other artists find on the amazing island of Aegina!
Other things to note
All art materials will be provided or found on the day. Please dress for the weather - we will be outside for 2-3 hours. Bring sun protection if you need it.

I’m an artist, teacher and facilitator, semi-retired community development professional and outdoor swimmer, and I split my time between the beautiful island of Aegina and Pennine West Yorkshire. I have decades’ of experience helping people to explore their passions, connect with others, do new things, create, learn and have fun. I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education specialising in community-based learning (University of Huddersfield, 1994) - but even more importantly, I have experiences, passions and ‘inside knowledge’ to share! I also live with an auto-immune disease, and am always happy to talk to you about adapting experiences to your own particular needs - just get in touch.

Where you'll be

First, you’ll join me to look at some of Kapralos’ work in the place it was created - the Museum established at his summer house & workshop. Then together we’ll explore some of the environment that was his inspiration, walking on a nearby beach to look for materials like the ones he used: trees, driftwood, stone, metal. You’ll create and build beach sculptures yourself, in the same landscape/seascape & under the same extraordinary Aegina light.
