What you'll do
A trip down memory lane with Berlin locals: You will meet two Berlin locals- from east and west and you will find out about their life's in the GDR and in West Berlin before the Berlin Wall came down and after 30 years of being reunified as a country. We'll start the experience in the former east at the historical former checkpoint Bornholmer strasse, where the Berlin Wall first fell and talk about the Cold War time, why the Berlin Wall was built and fell. The most important highlight in that meeting point is, that Regina was there that night, demonstrating for freedom and finally the Berlin Wall fell. She will talk about her experience. We'll continue walking(2km) on the "No mans land", an area that is not at all touristic, to an cozy cafeteria where we can have a coffee or cake and the time to go more deeper in our conversations. We'll talk about our personal life experience from east and west, about society's and community's that came out of two different political systems and about an typical East- and West Berliner. Between we'll also have the time to answer your questions. In the end of the experience we visit the most popular park in Berlin- "Mauerpark" with the biggest flea market on weekends, live karaoke, underground vibes and legal graffiti art on the former hidden East Berlin Wall. Eventually we end the experience in West Berlin.
We grew up in the same city but were raised in totally different political systems, one in the east and one in the west of Berlin. We are Valerie and Regina from two generations. Regina lived for 28 years in East Berlin and I was just a teenager, when the Berlin Wall fell. But even now after 30 years of being reunified as a country and a people our personal lives are still bearing the marks of the past. With our life experiences, different educations and values we bring history to life and give Berlin visitors the opportunity to get an authentic account of: "How was the life behind the Berlin Wall?" and does the wall still exist in our minds? We'll talk about the changes in the city, the Cold War, the history of the Berlin Wall, the characters in the east and west, and how unification of Germany has worked out.
