What you'll do

With a history stretching back two millennia, London has seen more than its fair share of rebellion and righteous (or not so righteous) retribution. This walking tour takes us from the site of the first Roman settlement buried deep underground at the heart of modern London’s financial district to the medieval execution spot at the Eastern edge of the City. Along the way, we will explore narrow alleys, view spectacular ancient and modern architecture and encounter some of the larger than life characters and momentous events that have left their marks on London over its two thousand years of history - including Queen Boudicca who destroyed Roman London in the year 61, the rebel "Emperor" Carausius whose revolt against Rome led to the destruction of the London Forum in the year 300, the 1381 Peasant's Revolt, Samuel Pepys who chronicled the destruction of London in 1666 (divine retribution for London's sinful ways?), Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite rebels of 1745, the notorious 18th Century Hellfire Club and the Gordon rioters who attacked the Bank of England in 1780.

I am a lawyer, historian and official City of London tour guide. Introducing guests to the splendours and secrets of my hometown is my passion. I try to make my tours a mixture of fun and fact (with some of the facts being funny and some of the fun being factual). With more than 35 years experience of hosting visitors to the City and access to sites that are not generally open or known to the public, I give my guests a true insider's perspective. Please contact me to arrange a private tour that will make your visit to London truly memorable. All of my income from guiding is donated to charity

Where you'll be

Roman remains hidden in a modern complex, Samuel Pepys' garden, a church gateway adorned with skulls, the execution site on Tower Hill, a beautiful Victorian market, medieval alleys, and modern skyscrapers, the discreet pub where the real Hellfire club and the fictional Pickwick Club held their meetings, the place where the Gordon rioters attacked the Bank of England. I will take you to extraordinary places that even City regulars seldom see

Such a great way to spend my afternoon. Ian was witty and very intelligent- he knows a lot of secrets of the city and we shared a quick pint afterwards! I'd thoroughly recommend this tour if you want to see a different side to London and to come face to face with history.

Fantastic tour. I've lived in and around London my whole life, yet Ian managed to show me places I never would have found on my own and share interesting new stories about places I've passed 1,000 times. Ian is a fantastic story-teller who clearly has a passion for, and deep knowledge of, London. He created a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere and made it such a fun day. I highly recommend this tour. Thanks, Ian!
