Northern Lights & Stargazing & Photos

Reykjavík, Iceland

What you'll do

We'll pick you up from Reykjavik city center and take you straight out of the light pollution to find a clear sky for viewing the Northern Lights. A successful sighting depends very much on the cloud cover and we know exactly where all the best viewing spots are.

We take photos of you under the Northern Lights, as many as you want, and explain the amazing science behind their behaviour, colour, intensity and more.

The Northern Lights are elusive and sometimes we must exercise patience and wait for them to show up. Once we have established a good spot we set up the telescope and invite you to explore planets in our solar system and deep space phenomena some lightyears away.

We also serve home made hot chocolate and Kleina, a local delicacy.

We are experts and professional Northern Lights hunters in Iceland. However, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and a sighting can never be guaranteed. We cancel the tour if the forecast is unfavourable and you can re-schedule to another day. If we don't see lights on your tour, you can come again for free.

The Northern Lights are best enjoyed with a small group you can call your friends at the end of the night. And so we travel in tiny groups. Each driver guide takes maximum 7 passengers in a vehicle and we never travel in more than 2 vehicles together to protect the intimate experience

We take your photo with the Northern Lights but can also help you set your own camera. Here's another little guide I wrote: https://happyworld.is/northern-lights-photography-settings

Born and raised under the Northern Lights of Iceland, I love how seeing them makes me feel at one with the universe, every time. I also love taking pictures of people under the Northern Lights, experiencing the magic for the first time.

I co'founded Happyworld Iceland with my friend Robert in 2014. With his knowledge of the nightsky, being an amateur astronomer, and my flare for photography, being a designer, and both our love for the Northern Lights we hatched our first tour: Northern Lights & Stargazing.

What we did different from other tours was to bring a big telescope along, take photos of everyone and I made real hot chocolate at home for every tour. Now that we have grown and have a handful of amazing guides working with us, we still do all these things. While still keeping our groups small and personal.

Where you'll be

We choose our location each night based on where we predict the best Northern Lights sighting. We do have a few favourites; a ghostly abandoned farm by the ocean, a secret spot in the middle of a volcanic lava field and a wild, sulphur smelling hot spring area to name but a few.

The tour was great, even though we didn't see much of the lights as they were too faint during our scheduled night, but still the guide did his best for this tour. However, the only problem was with the back seats of the car, as these were too tight for adults to sit for about two-hour round trip ride.

Northern lights were amazing. The weather was perfect and so was our host. It was a smaller group which was nice. I enjoyed it even though we all were very cold. Our guide some homemade hot chocolate which was excellent.

Really fun night! Þröstur was a great host, very accommodating and knowledgeable about the night sky and northern lights! He was also very patient when taking photos (great shots!!). Overall we had a fun memorable night, filled with funny stories and anecdotes (especially about the Icelandic cold). Dress well!!

We highly recommend this experience! The host is honest, transparent and responsive. There were lots of clouds on our scheduled night so they have to cancel and we were given the option to get a full refund (no questions asked) or schedule for another night. This is totally understandable since the Aurora tracking sites and apps did indeed show that there was little to no chance of seeing the Aurora that night. We appreciate this since this just shows the host's honest and pure intent of letting guests experience and see the Northern Lights. They accommodated our request to go on the next evening and fortunately, the skies cleared up and we were able to see the Northern Lights. A huge shoutout to Mr. Gandri, our guide! He is one awesome human being, one of the kindest and most patient and engaging person we've met. He entertained us with stories about the Aurora, Vikings, Milky Way, etc. and shared insightful information on how the Northern Lights are formed, etc. There were also hot chocolate (freshly made and not the one you buy from store) and Kleina to warm us up on the cold night. He also offered to take pictures of us using his high-tech camera equipment which resulted in really vivid and clear pictures of us under the Northern Lights. We would not have gotten those shots on our own. All in all an awesome experience! Thank you Mr. Gandri!

Really fantastic experience. Þröstur was super knowledgeable and went out of his way to ensure we had the best possible viewing experience. Answered all of our questions, let us nerd out, and took some great photos.
