What you'll do

Shanghai was, world widely speaking, the city that hosted the biggest number (around 25,000) of Jewish refugees during the Second World War :)

I will introduce you to the former community of more than 10,000 Jewish refugees, and birthplace to many moving life stories. In the tour, we would tap into this one-and-only ethnically diverse ghetto in the world, stopping by at some local Chinese street food at the mean time. Highlights of the tour include discovering a former living area of survivors and seeing a cafe once opened by Jews.

At the end of the experience, there are 2 options:

A) During the tours at daytime, I would invite you on a ferry ride across the mother river of Shanghai that takes us all the way to Pudong, where the tallest buildings in Shanghai are located, to have a glimpse of the Shanghai skyline.

B) During the tours at night time, I would love to take you to the local food market, which showcases an assortment of authentic Chinese stores and shops, which you might not be able to find on your own.

※ This experience stands out with my special design of an interactive, small group experience. It would be a perfect 2 hours spent for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts and those who have deep interest for Shanghai's past and present.

I am a local Shanghainese who is freshly graduated from a Bechelor degree in English. I was inspired to create this journey through my readings of several books on this topic, my own travels and my realization that the world is closely connected. I would love to present you the authentic Jewish quarter, one area that most represents Shanghai's inclusiveness, to travelers from all over the world. Since I started this experience in 2017, I have gladly welcomed travelers from 19 countries and 5 continents.

We had a great experience. Yika was responsive and kind enough to accommodate same day booking. She also took us to places that we would otherwise not know where to go. The history was very interesting and we learned a lot.

Yika was a great guide! She cared very much about my experience and had some fun insights about a little known part of Shanghai history. She was very kind, answered all of my questions, and helped me find my way after the tour. Yika easily transitioned between Mandarin and English to make sure everyone in our group knew what was going on. I learned a lot that I’m excited to share with friends back home.

It was a lovely walk and the guide Yika was super friendly and knew a lot about the neighbourhood! For the two hours and everything that we saw, we did find it quite expensive but we enjoyed ourself a lot, had some good street food for along the way and thus happy that we could support local economy in this way ;)

This tour was amazing! Yika showed me around various buildings in the former Jewish district and shared interesting stories and historical facts about the Jewish refugees in Shanghai. We also walked around local markets and she explained different types of cuisine and we ate some amazingly sweet strawberries! Yika speaks great English, communication was not even slightly a problem. Highly recommend this niche history tour!

My mom and I thoroughly enjoyed Yika’s tour as it gave us a good overview of the experience of Jewish refugees living in Shanghai. Yika even treated us to some local food which was quite tasty!
