What you'll do

■To warm up…
I am going to tell you how to rub a sumi (India ink), how to use a painting brush, how to draw on a washi (Japanese paper), and how to achieve a wide variety of shading and tone. After learning the basis of Suibokuga, let’s draw and practice bamboo seeing my demonstration!

■Let’s go “into the unknown” and find yourself!
I think that the beauty of Suibokuga is based on the left space, which means how we don’t draw so much. As you draw bamboo, you will feel this concept and I will also tell you what it means. Also, it is often said that drawing reflects what you are. If we draw the same bamboo, drawn paintings are different from person to person. Suibokuga is very profound and interesting. Through experiencing Suibokuga, you will be able to concentrate on yourself and may find what you really are by leaving the bustle of the cities.

■Others…
I think highly of my modern sense which I feel through my daily life. As you draw Suibokuga, you will also understand the concept of “modern Suibokuga”, which is the title of this class.
If you want to bring some pictures or materials which you want to draw, please bring them! Let’s draw it together with my guide! Landscapes, flowers and so on are better as motifs.
Your Suibokuga works will be a special souvenir of your travel in Japan.
Other things to note
In case you spill ink on your clothes, if possible, wear clothes which you don’t care about getting dirty.

I have drawn and taught Suibokuga for more than 40 years. I mastered Suibokuga from my father, who was seen as an expert of Suibokuga in Japan. I went to India in order to teach it in 1994. I have held many art exhibitions with my students and other artists. I have drawn landscapes, flowers, abstract paintings, and so on as motifs. When you hear about Suibokuga, you might think of it as one of the traditional Japanese arts. Respecting the tradition of it, I always draw Suibokuga on the basis of modern sense which I can feel through my daily life. My son is going to attend this program as a translator and he also draws Suibokuga.

This was such a treat! We loved the experience from start to finish. Everyone was so kind and helpful and best of all we left with a new understanding and appreciation for Japanese art. We would definitely do it again!

Amazing experience! I really enjoyed the class and I learnt this very special technique. Niki is truly an expert. I Really recommend this experience to everyone that comes to tokyo, even if you don’t know anything about painting. Is very easy to get there as well, just taking the metro. Thanks for everything!

This was a really enjoyable experience. Niki's son met us at the station and it was only a very short walk to the studio. I already do a lot of painting but this was a completely different experience. I loved practicing painting the different parts of bamboo -in a very loose style, which was quite hard for me as I tend to concentrate on a lot of detail, so very different. A very positive experience. We were also shown many examples of Niki's paintings, which I enjoyed. My Japanese sister-in-law also joined me for this experience, she has never done any painting before, really enjoyed will try to do more. Thank you for a fantastic experience

Niki-san, his wife and son make a wonderful team - they were friendly, gracious and personable. My mother and I enjoyed the class and would recommend it as a lovely cultural experience while visiting Japan.
