Strasbourg, between France and Germany

Strasbourg, France

Experience hosted by Vladimir

  1. 3 hours
  2. Hosted in English, Spanish and French

What you'll do

Join me on a walking tour of Strasbourg! We’ll talk about its origins as a Roman camp, the moments of glory as a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire, its millenary cathedral, Strasbourg and the events of the French Revolution and how the Marseillaise was written down in this city (yeah, weird, right?) and we will visit the canals of the Petite France. But I want to offer you something else (and that no one else will), as a lover of History, I’m passionate concerning stories of WW2, so we will have a conversation regarding Strasbourg during its darker years, from its bombing in 1870 by the Prussian troops, the return into France after the First World War and the life of the town throughout the Second World War. We will talk about the Nazi occupation of Strasbourg, from the life experiences of Anne-Marie, my girlfriend's grandmother, (she is still alive and happy that I'm sharing her life with you!) and share with you some of her family photos and letters!
We will walk by places that saw their original names changed, like the old Adolf Hitler Platz, the Karl Roos Platz, we will walk outside the former Kommandantur and all that while I tell you about the American bombardments that the city suffered allowing the entrance of the allied forces.
By the way! This experience is dog friendly and feel free to ask if the time proposed for a tour doesn't fit your schedule

I come from Chile, a former law student, former tourist guide in Chile and backpacker who travelled from Ecuador to the Strait of Magellan (passing multiple times through Patagonia)

In 2016 I travelled 13,000 km to improve my language skills doing a degree in Modern Languages at Université de Strasbourg. In 2021 I got a second degree as Guide Conférencier, meaning that I'm an Official Tourist Guide in France (Guide Conférencier)

Passionate about history and World War II, I arrived to Strasbourg, falling in love with it and now hoping to share that love for Strasbourg with you.

For your safety (and mine) I already have my 2 Pfizer doses and a First Aid diploma issued by the French Civil Protection and recognised by the French Ministry of the Interior (PSC 1).

This tour was an excellent way to see Strasbourg. Vladimir told a detailed and entertaining history of Strasbourg and Alsace from ancient times, through its turbulent history, and into the modern day. You can tell he really enjoys history and sharing what he knows, and he even includes fascinating pieces of an individual family's history in Strasbourg around WW2. Excellent value and a great time.

This was one of the best activities I’ve gone for during my 1 week trip in France! Vlad is so knowledgeable about the history of the region and his passion really shone through during the tour. You can tell he did his research thoroughly and the tour was planned excellently. I really like the personal touch he put in by showing us the pictures of his girlfriend’s great- and grandparents who lived through the history. Also really enjoyed the architectural history he told us about the buildings along the way! Would definitely recommend this walking tour if you’re curious to find out more about the complicated history of the Alsace region 😊

Vladmir is generous with sharing his insights on Stasbourg's history. He takes you through a comprehensive tour of Strasbourg's past with France and Germany. The commentary is rich not just in historical facts, but also architecture and social factors. Would recommend for the history buffs who want to know more about Strasbourg's history - to put meaning to the beautiful cityscapes. Also, do consider some of his other tours as well!

Vladimir is a great guide, we did not have time to finish the entire trip, but enjoyed all the time we spent with him.
