What you'll do

Upon your arrival to Finca Alto de Abra, I will give you an overview of Costa Rica’s coffee tradition and information about our farm. Then you will visit the nursery so you can see how we reproduce coffee trees using a very particular technique in which we are pioneers in Costa Rica.

Next, we are going where the action is and you will harvest some coffee cherries! We will walk among the coffee trees, I’ll explain you how to identify which cherries are ready for harvesting and how to pick them, and if desired, I will provide you with a typical basket to pick coffee cherries for about 15 minutes or as long as you want. You will also share and talk with the coffee pickers that are working at the time of your visit so you can have a better idea of who they are and the important work they do.

After that, you will visit the micro-mill where we process the cherries for specialty coffee. I’ll explain about the different processes and you’ll see firsthand how this is done.

We will finish the experience with a tasting session to enjoy our different specialty micro-lots. Also, water and soft drinks will be available. I’ll be more than happy to answer all your questions and I promise you that after this visit you will never see a cup of coffee the same way!
Other things to note
Finca Alto de Abra is located 30 minutes from San José. The fastest way to arrive to the farm is by Uber (from San José the ride could cost around USD $13).

I’m the fifth generation of the Hernández family that grows coffee in Finca Alto de Abra. I’ve been among coffee trees since I can remember, first with my grandfather, now with my dad. I think it is fair to say coffee runs in my blood. I’m passionate about growing superb quality coffee, working a land I deeply love and respect. I feel blessed to continue my family’s legacy.

Where you'll be

The entire experience will take place at Finca Alto de Abra during the harvesting season (December through February). The harvesting season is very special as it is the busiest time of the year in the farm and a unique opportunity for you to experience first hand how specialty coffee is produced from seed to cup.

If you are in this area you need to come visit Claudia and her parents. Very sweet and beautiful people. It was like visiting old friends and she really makes the tour personal and special. You see it all close up and even some amazing wildlife. She grew up there and knows it inside and out. It’s the best kind of tourism. She prepares a coffee tasting with you and is so sweet to be around. Cant say enough. Go visit her!

We extremely recommend this experience! Claudia is a nice person, a great story-teller and she will make your experience absolutely unique! She had a deep knowledge of coffee planting, processing and history and she answered without problems all our curious questions!:) Her mum welcomed us warmly and prepared for us a great fruit snack. Then we had an opportunity to taste three different specialty coffees we were talking about and tried to make them by our own. We really appreciate the Claudia's time and kindness with which she made this tour. The plantation looks amazing, the place is wonderful and it is truly visible they care about their plants with love (and sweat! :D ). Thank you once again! Make yourself sure you wont miss this!

100% MUST SEE!!!! / 100% RECOMENDADO. You cannot miss this tour. I did Britt coffee a few weeks before and it pales in comparison - the Finca Alto de Abra is full of history and charisma, where the small group of workers have established a community amongst themselves. Ubering was so easy and so worth it ($16 round trip from Pozos). Claudia is an EXPERT on coffee in all areas and her family is so kind and welcoming. We saw her farm, 4 different coffee processes, the river on the property, and she welcomed us into her family home for a delicious plate of tropical fruit, lemonade made from the lemon tree next to the house, and various coffee samples made fresh in front of you. This tour way exceeded my expectations. ¡¡¡ESPECTACULAR!!! Mil gracias Claudia!!!

If you like coffee, you will love this experience. You will learn about the different types of coffee, their various processing methods and the key difference between speciality and commercial coffee. There is no need for having coffee knowledge - Claudia will explain everything in detail and will answer all possible questions. The best thing was the possibility to try the different coffee cherries and enjoying a coffee tasting at the end. All in all highly recommended!
