Hi, I’m Aya, the owner of SAKURA Experience Japanese Culture in Kyoto. I was born in Kyoto in 1967 and I grew up here. I still live in the center of town.My husband is a descendant of a large trading family from the Edo period called House Ito. His ancestor hosted the 3rd Shogun, Iemitsu Tokugawa, for a falconing event in 1638 in Komagome, Somei Village, near Tokyo. A more recent ancestor became the 8th Shogun’s garden advisor. He developed the Somei Yoshino variety of cherry blossom which is now the Japanese national flower. It makes up over 80% of the cherry blossom we see in Spring. We opened our classroom in August 2018 and named it SAKURA in gratitude for our family’s achievements. Please enjoy the many cooking classes and cultural experience classes we offer here in the cultural heart of Japan.

This class was wonderful! The food we made was so Delicious and Aya was a great instructor. She gave helpful advice about how to find ingredients and make the recipes back home. She also gave us full written recipes and a certificate at the end on beautiful handmade paper, which was a nice touch! Her husband took a lot of photos of the class which they shared with us afterwards. I would highly recommend Aya and would take another class from her the next time I am in Kyoto.
