AURORA SNOWSHOE ADVENTURE

Rovaniemi, Finland

Experience hosted by Christoph

  1. 3.5 hours
  2. Hosted in English, German and French

What you'll do

The best way to see the northern lights is to be outside in beautiful unspoiled nature. I will take you there.

With snowshoes we will go through untouched snow to find a perfect spot for aurora watching. We will make a fire and have some hot drinks to keep us warm. If the sky is clear and the aurora activity is high, you will have good chances to see northern lights. If it is cloudy more luck is involved. In any case this will be a wonderful adventure. I will also bring some sausages to grill and some cookies.

I will pick you up at your Rovaniemi accommodation or at the meeting point and bring you to a forest area 15 to 30 km away from the city, according to the weather conditions. After the tour I will bring you back.

During the tour you will get good understanding about going out to the nature where snow remains untouched. You will learn some basics about survival in the arctic woods, about life in the area and about reindeer herding and local Sami natives. You can ask more from topics you are interested. After the tour you will have better understanding about the life far North in the arctics.
Other things to note
The temperatures can be very low (under -25°C) so make sure to be dressed appropriately. It is very important to wear extra warm shoes. Remember : if your feet are tight you will feel cold. Please contact me if you are not sure of your equipment. I might have some to borrow.

Years before I became a Lapland wilderness guide , I already had the passion of exploring wild nature. I traveled Siberia, Alaska and Scandinavia and learned all the skills needed to live in remote places. I love to share my knowledge and life experience to inspire people and make the world a better place. I spent as much time outdoors as I can. Discovering new places with my dog and searching for the northern lights at night.

I also speak German, French and Spanish

Where you'll be

The tour takes place in a beautiful forest area in the Rovaniemi surroundings, far enough to be away from the light pollution. We try to go where the sky is clear that's why the location can change.

This was a wonderful experience. The forest was beautiful and peaceful with nobody else around, and we were lucky to have a clear, starry sky above us. Chris is very thoughtful about your personal needs and safety and well-prepared, and he seems quite experienced as a guide and knowledgable about hiking and camping in the forests around here. He taught me some skills that I will be able to make use of on my own hiking trips as well, which I really appreciate :) We were lucky to be able to see the northern lights on our walk back, but it would have been worth it even without that for everything else about the experience.

Fantastic evening excursion into the arctic circle forest. Chris is a great guide who is very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna. You will have a great time even if you don’t see the northern lights! Cooking sausages on the fire was a highlight!

Was an amazing experience hiking through a forest in snow and making a campfire there. We saw the northern lights as well which was a great highlight! Highly recommend the experience.

It was a one of a kind experience, we never thought we would do that until today. Chris was very patient with us. Our accommodation was outside Rovaniemi, but he was happy enough to come and pick us up.. The sky was clear so we had the chance to catch a glimpse of the northern lights although its geometric activity was low.

It has been a joy to travel with Chris for an evening. He tried his best to let me experience something special, and he succeeded in that. Although the northern lights did not show, it was a great walk and fire in nature. Definitely worth booking this trip!

We had a great evening snowshoeing! Chris shared a lot of his great knowledge and wilderness experience. Even though no lights were out, we really enjoyed hanging out around the fire in the middle of the peaceful Finnish wilderness.
