What you'll do

Explore ancient civilizations and learn the history of bread

I will share with you the skills and knowledge of how museums tell stories of ancient civilisations using objects—or, in museum speak with artefacts. By sharing my museology skills and through chatting together on my curated exploration of the British Museum, we will unlock some fascinating historical knowledge. I will explain how material culture—the study of objects—can give a memorable glimpse into the past. This experience will focus on the history of bread and other types of cooking—a key aspect of our ancestor's survival and a key to their-and our- identity.

I am a food researcher, writer and experienced tour guide who has worked with bakeries and restaurants to give their modern recipes a historical twist. I love history and what I find so fascinating is the way every-day people (and kings, queens and other leaders) used to cook amazing food. The utensils they used to cook and eat with can still be seen today in museums. Sometimes things like cups, bowls, spoons, and knives are thousands of years old! Incredible. I spent over 10 years working in museums and learned all about how an object holds so many secret ancient stories. I would like to share these museum skills with you so we can discover hidden history together.

Where you'll be

Join us for a welcome over drinks and delicious homemade pastries in a small local cafe. We then take you across the road to start my curated storytelling exploration of the upper floor of the British Museum. Here we use the skills of museology (discovering hidden historical secrets by looking at objects from the past) as we enjoy the displays of 10,000 year-old farming and cooking objects starting with the Ancient Mesopotamian civilisation
