What you'll do

This tour showcases the magical multicolored ice formations found along Lake Superior's winter shoreline. We begin at Frog Bay Tribal Park winding our way through a majestic, old-growth Hemlock/cedar forest, then cross over the frozen, Frog Creek coastal wetland. Tracks of otter, fox, Fisher and coyotes are common here. Then we venture onto a frozen Lake Superior following the shoreline south towards Red Cliff Bay. This tour offers views of 9 of the Apostle Islands. As we move down the shoreline, red sandstone rock outcrops begin to rise up and tower up to 100 feet above the lake. These cliff formations are the source of the “Red Cliff Indian Reservation” name. Groundwater seeps year around from the sandstone and in winter creates amazing ice formations. Pictures best describe their beauty. Several caves have been carved into the sandstone for us to explore. Availability: January through early March dependending on Lake Ice conditions. What to expect: (3.5-4 hours) Four miles snowshoeing over level terrain. Temperatures ranging from the low 30’s to below zero. Windy conditions could create extreme cold dependending on wind direction (see note below).

Learn more about Jon

Jon

Hey everyone I’m Jon I live right here on the Red Cliff Indian Reservation. I LOVE this place! I’ve spent over 35 years exploring northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Canada as a geologist and environmental scientist. I’ve navigated for thousands of miles by canoe, kayak and snowshoes through the regions deepest wildernesses. I’m certified in first aid, CPR with over 30 years experience leading trips. I’m an avid tracker and woodsman living each day in the forests or on the lake hunting , fishing, and gathering. I’ve learned over the years that each foray onto the lake or the forests imparts a certain wisdom to us, a certain understanding of the connection between all things. My mission is to share the experience of this place with the hope it will pass that wisdom of understanding and a passion within you.
