What you'll do

By the end of the day each of you will have made a ring in silver. The day will start with information on health and safety and a brief introduction to the tools and small machines of the jewellery lab. The workshop will continue with a series of short instruction sessions about the tools and techniques followed by hands-on making sessions, with a lot of hands-on help from us! You will be able to choose the shape of your ring by choosing from silver plate (rectangular) or from different shapes of wire (square, d-shape...). You will then be taken through how to safely cut the plate or wire, texture and polish it, bend it, solder it and clean and finish your piece. This workshops is a great first introduction to silversmithing. It is aimed at adults who wish to learn new skills and make a unique ring for themselves or as presents. It is also suitable for those who have some prior experience they would like to rekindle. Couples getting engaged or married can create their engagement or wedding rings with my guidance.
Other things to note
There are many options for accommodation available in Todi. The workshop is above a good restaurant which has gluten free options and there are plenty of other good eateries in town.

I am a history of art graduate, Italian mother tongue speaker and co-funder of Art Lab Todi with Stephen, who is the jeweller and teacher. Stephen has been working in metals for 40 years, starting at a young age in engineering. He has been a goldsmith for over 20 years, following a BA hons level degree in 3D design, specialising in metalwork and jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University. He also facets coloured gemstones which allows him to design truly unique jewels. He has taught jewellery techniques for 10 years at UK colleges (Oaklands College, Bath College, University of Hertfordshire) and private schools. We now live in Italy full time teaching jewellery techniques and working as a bespoke jeweller.

Where you'll be

We will conduct our workshops using our custom made communal jeweller's benches, where students can sit together at a safe distance, with their own individual space to work. We will use jewellery tools including cutting saws, sharp files and high temperature soldering torches. The laboratory is easily accessible on the ground floor of a listed building on one of the main streets of Todi, a historic hilltop town in Umbria, Italy’s green heart.
