What you'll do

This is a chance to join me as I explore & draw in the magical setting of Palaiachora, in the hidden heart of Aegina.
I’ll meet you at the car park behind Agious Nektarios/Holy Trinity Monastery, overlooking this ancient, ruined, hillside town. There, you’ll get an overview of the site & its 35 remaining churches.
We’ll head 400m up the road to the church of the Holy Cross and the main footpath onto the site.
You’ll walk with me along the winding, uneven, bottom path of the old village and a little way up the hill to the Byzantine church of St Kyriaki. You’ll enjoy absolutely breath-taking views of the interior of Aegina Island, the mountains, sea and dozens of ancient & modern churches.
But this is not a guided tour: this beautiful landscape is like my local park: I come here to stroll (often with my dog), enjoy the beautiful surroundings & sketch. I’ll answer questions if I can but there will be many I can’t!
I will settle for a while in my chosen spot to draw and I invite you to join me - I’ll provide materials. We’ll have the chance to do lightning sketches of a landscape, part of the Byzantine ruins, a fragment of painted mural and an orthodox icon. The whole site is wrapped around the hillside but only a few 100m wide.
We’ll leave Palaiachora as the late afternoon light begins to fade. I am almost certain you’ll want to return
Other things to note
The ground at Palaiachora is very uneven & the walk includes some climbing up & down, but we will be walking slowly & there are lots of places to rest. Bring water. The closest bus-stop is on Λεωφ. Αφαιάς in front of Agious Nektariou monastery - the small car park is approx. 350m round the corner.

I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education specialising in community-based learning (University of Huddersfield, 1994) - but even more importantly, I have experiences, knowledge and passions to share! Where you'll be

It is hard to describe the extraordinary area of Palaiachora! There are beautiful views but you need to see them for yourself. There are 30+ amazing Byzantine churches - some ruined, some with murals, some still in use - you’ll see them all from a distance & I will take you to my favourite ones. Come prepared to spend a couple of hours looking intently at a unique and wonderful place.
