What you'll do

By the end of my mosaic workshop, you will have decorated a simple 15cm square ceramic tile with a variety of vintage crockery, beads, shells, glass beads, vitreous glass and buttons, all of which I will supply. I also provide plenty of reference books for you to browse for ideas, and get some inspiration for your design.

Over the course of the workshop we will cover the following:
• Planning your piece
Selecting a pattern, choosing colour, form and texture
• Tools and Techniques
Using nippers to cut and shape the crockery for application and glueing
• Creating your Masterpiece
Applying your chosen materials to your design and creating your unique finished piece.

There will be a grouting demonstration at the end of the session for you to complete your tile at home. Information sheet and grout supplied.

Refreshments on arrival and a light lunch half way through the workshop included.
Other things to note
Previous experience of making mosaics is not required for this workshop but if you are already familiar with the process, there is plenty of scope to improve your skills by making a 3 dimensional piece. If you cannot see a date or time that suits you, please contact me to organise an alternative.

I have a Batchelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from Camberwell College of Art, where I specialised in sculpture. I discovered the art of mosaic 15 years ago when I was working as an artist-in-residence in palliative care. Among the many arts projects that I facilitated, one of the most rewarding was enabling patients to create a large scale mosaic out of vintage china, for the wall of the hospice garden.

When my four year arts residency finished, I set up my own business creating sculptures for home and garden from retro objects, that I repurposed and embellished with vintage ceramic mosaics. Since then I've been running mosaic workshops, sharing my passion for mid century modern crockery and up-cycling!

I also teach in mainstream education as a lecturer in photography and art at my local university centre, West Kent College

I took my 11-year old son to this experience to make a mosaic. Sarah was a wonderful host and made me and my son feel very welcome. She was warm and engaging and demonstrated how to make the mosaics really well so that even my son (who is not particulary arty) was able to produce a really fantastic mosaic, and really enjoyed it. We were both really happy with our creations! It has rekindled a creative urge for me and I would love to do more mosaics and artwork in general. The location was also beautiful, an amazing cottage in rural Kent with wildlife and scenery to die for. All in all we had a brilliant day and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Really enjoyed the whole experience. What a treasure trove in Sarah’s studio- lots of colourful vintage crockery around the room for inspiration to make your own unique mosaic creation! I felt so proud of myself at the end of the day having had no idea what I would make when I walked in the room. Sarah made my son and I feel really comfortable. At age 8, he struggled to think about what to make but Sarah helped him cut up some tiles and showed us books for ideas on what we could make. Before long we were loving playing around with the cutting tools and choosing our colours and designs. My son freestyled in his own unique way and made a tile which he now proudly displays in his bedroom! I am also really pleased with my pink and blue potted flower design which matches my kitchen. Having now done this experience, I feel empowered to take on a larger project on my garden wall having learnt about all of the materials and tools required as well as techniques for achieving a piece of art that is pleasing to the eye. Sarah showed us how to bring in different textures such as beads and buttons to help balance the tile and bring it to life. At the end of the session, she showed us how to grout the tiles to achieve a perfect finish. I have already recommended this experience to lots of friends as I really felt proud to make something so special in relatively little time. Sarah also made delicious cakes which my son was delighted with! It would be great as a Mother’s Day or birthday present idea. Thank you so much for a great day, Sarah!
