What you'll do
Join us for a multi-sensory experience celebrating the diverse and vibrant heritage of the Stratford Road. Immerse yourself in true stories hidden inside abandoned Irish pubs and woven into the Asian fabric shops. The Stratford Road in Sparkhill has seen many migrants settle along it through the years. From the Irish to the Somalian community; their memories will be brought to life by our friendly walk leaders who will talk you through the changing scene of the road. You will start at The Bordesley Centre and make your way past the aromatic bakeries serving Arabian sweet tea whilst enjoying some freshly made Yemeni bread. Learn about the famous Balti triangle as you venture through the bustling and lively atmosphere boasting numerous Pakistani and Indian grocers, fashion retailers, food stalls and more. You will have the opportunity to purchase a gift or souvenir from Gohil's Emporium which has been on the Stratford Road for over 40 years. End the tour with us sharing a cup of hot Karak Chai, made with fragrant cardamom in a little chai shop overlooking the colourful Stratford Road. “It was fantastic, time flew by. We need more of these walks!” “Enlightening” “Inspiring” “Entertaining”
I'm Sabra and I'm producing these walks which will be led by one of our team: Dharmesh: I'm a producer in the arts and a Media Studies lecturer at BCU. I'm passionate about heritage and have worked on projects about the Stratford Road for many years. I can’t wait to share it with you! Vimal: I'm an actor with experience of theatre, film, TV & Radio. I grew up not far from Stratford Road & find it fascinating how this road has been such a core part of migration into Birmingham. I feel it’s so important to amplify the voices of those who have called this place home over the years. Kiren: I'm an actress with experience ranging from theatre to Bollywood! I grew up in Handsworth and love learning about different cultures. Working on this project has been an amazing learning experience, one that I would love to share.
