What you'll do

Albert Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” In this half day workshop I invite you to tap into your artistic nature and join me in creating unique Lampwork glass beads. Lampworking is a process in which a torch is used to melt rods of glass into a bead.

We will meet at my charming and cozy home studio. After going over the glossary of terms, our safety procedures, and a tour of my studio, we will begin creating our first basic, handcrafted beads using techniques that I am constantly refining. I’ll teach you techniques on how to decorate and shape the beads you make.

About half way through our workshop we will take a half-hour break to stretch our legs and have a quick snack. You are welcome at this time to enjoy the fresh air and explore the lush wooded hiking trails on the property. After our refreshing break, we will finish our beads.

Come to this workshop with a sense of curiosity and leave knowing that you have personally created a few one of a kind works of art.
Other things to note
After completing a bead it is put into a kiln overnight to cool slowly for strength and durability. You are welcome to return the next day to pick your beads up, or I can ship them to you at no additional cost if it’s more convenient.

Hi, I'm Cindy Erickson. For the last six years I have been the owner, artist and designer at One Big Tree Designs. My work has been accepted into many juried art shows over the years and my beads have been published in three trade magazines. I’ve often been told that my work has inspired others to create beautiful things for themselves and for others, and to think outside the box to up-cycle everyday items into wonderful works of art.

My expertise is in Lampworking. I have studied this unique art form with some of the best instructors in the country and I am continually honing my skills. In keeping with my desire to be sustainable, I love creating beads using bottles or glassware that I break with a hammer and melt on my torch. You will enjoy using the beads that we create together in jewelry or to incorporate into gifts.

Where you'll be

My home and studio are nestled in what we affectionately call the "Enchanted Forest" on the Northern Oregon Coast just twenty minutes from the quaint coastal villages of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler. We are across scenic Highway 53, also known as the Necanicum Highway, from the North Fork of the Nehalem River and the Nehalem Fish Hatchery.

I was a little afraid going in... I mean, blowtorch, right? Cindy was a great teacher. I had fun, learned, and made some pretty fun beads. Cindy even brought in gluten-free, no refined sugar nut butter balls instead of cookies and pastry for our little snack! So appreciated. And the surroundings are just marvelous. I’d love to walk through that forest in silent contemplation. Thanks so much!

Cindy kindly accommodated our class request while we were visiting the area. Her home is beautiful, as is her artwork. She was a great instructor—very patient and kind. We had a great time and have a new appreciation for this art.

My wife and I saw this experience listed here on AirBNB and decide to try it on a whim. We contacted Cindy because we were not available on the days she had listed, and she was very accommodating. Her studio is tucked away in the forest which really added to the experience. We had plenty of time to learn how to make our glass beads and even more time to practice making several styles. If you're going to be in the area, you should absolutely contact Cindy and set up a schedule for yourself. She was an absolute delight to spend time with. When my wife and I come back to the coast, we're going to try this again.

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience and time with Cindy creating beautiful glass beads together. Cindy has created a wonderful experience great for newbies to the glass making world and I was amazed at how much she was able to get us to create together in such a short time! My boyfriend and I were able to create several different beads during our time with Cindy and we realize there is so much more to learn! We would 100% repeat our time with Cindy now that we have been shown the ropes. Cindy also provided a break with yummy tea from a local farm just down the street from her, delicious pastries from a local bakery, and a magical walk through the forest in her backyard. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who enjoys learning crafts and working with their hands. No prior experience required! Cindy has a great teaching method to help newbies learn the ropes fairly quickly and will get you making beads! You will have something beautiful and handmade by you to take home with you!

I highly recommend this Experience! Cindy was a gracious host, and she is excellent at what she teaches. She welcomed my friend and I immediately upon arrival and had everything set up and ready to go. She obviously has a lot of expertise and enjoys lamp work bead making; she promoted safety first and was very patient in her approach. I consider myself a *crafts* person so it was interesting trying an art I've never heard about. It was fun finding my inner muse! I especially appreciate how Cindy endeavors to repurpose ordinary bottles into stunning glass beads, and then she takes it a step further and creates beautiful accessories and jewelry, too! I liked this Experience so much I plan on taking it again.
