What you'll do

We'll spend the morning hiking to the top of Mt. Tonbo (535.2m). The hike up will take about 1.5 hours from the trailhead (it's about a 20 minute walk from the station to the start of the hike) and the hike down will be an hour. We'll spend 15-20 minutes at the top with our picnic lunch from a local sandwich shop. The views from the top are spectacular. On a clear day, we can see across the ocean to many small islands, and to Saga prefecture. After the hike, we'll head to a local onsen known for its water quality. The onsen has separate areas for men and women, both outdoor and indoor baths, including green tea and red wine baths, a salt sauna, and a hot sauna. We'll spend 1-1.5 hours here. Depending on how we feel post-onsen, we can grab a bite to eat (not included in price) in the dining area before heading back to the city.

I've been leading day hikes in the mountains around Fukuoka and Itoshima since 2016. I opened my own yoga and fitness studio Fit in Fukuoka in April 2017, and am always looking for ways to keep travelers and locals alike fit while exploring all of the nature that Fukuoka has to offer.

Where you'll be

We'll hike to the summit of Mt. Tonbo, the last mountain in the ridge line that separates Fukuoka Prefecture from Saga Prefecture. After the hike, we'll visit Mamushi Onsen. Mamushi means snake - the name comes from an old legend that says a man who was bitten by vipers was cured after bathing in and drinking onsen water.
