What you'll do

In the 19th century, the region where the Madureira neighborhood is today was called Dry Carioca neighborhood. It was a rural area with farms all over the place. The neighborhood only started to be more populated when the train tracks got here. From then on, the entire region was occupied by the migration of contingents arriving from downtown, the interior of the state and other states in Brazil. These families made several cultural values remain. Each family brought different beliefs, musicality and cuisine and, in this way, Madureira came to be known as one of the most democratic and diverse places in the suburb to live. During our walk, we will talk about the whole history of this place, about the matriarchs, the famous aunts of samba, and about the strength of religions in a sensory experience of colors, flavors and aromas. At the end, we will taste a typical carioca drink. Photo: Blog Giramundo

Adriana

Hello! I am Adriana, carioca, student of tourism, born and raised in Madureira. I fell in love with tourism in 2017 and, since then, I have sought to specialize more and more. I grew up listening to various stories of my neighborhood and its characters and how religious diversity and samba have always attracted attention here. And, because of all this, the idea of this walking tour was born.

Where you'll be

We will start our experience at the train station, where we will talk about the birth and development of the neighborhood. From there, we will continue to a Samba School and talk about the immigration of blacks and mixed races to this region. Our last stop is the Mercadão de Madureira, a place that was considered intangible property in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. The market has 2 floors with almost 100 stores of religious products of African origin.
