What you'll do

Learn how to play a simple Irish tune on tinwhistle.

You'll have a lesson on the Irish tin whistle (a simple melody that can be learned quite quickly). Then we can have a sing song where you get to play your tune and sing some favourite Irish songs along with me on guitar (words provided). We can make a video at the end so you have a way to remember your experience.

I've been playing traditional Irish music on various instruments since the age of 5. All of my family play too. I've traveled the world bringing our music to as far flung corners as Mongolia, Iceland and Taiwan. I'm passionate about our native music and I want to convey that to visitors to Ireland. I think it's a shame that all visitors get to hear is a small selection of songs that bar managers in Temple Bar insist we play 'for the tourists'. Our music has so much more to offer and I'd like to give you an insight into that and a chance to feel what it's like to participate.

This was such a fantastic experience! Brenda was so much fun, so knowledgeable, and such a great teacher. At the end of an hour, we could all play a tune on the tin whistle, even though none of us had played before! Amazing! Brenda made us all feel relaxed and free to try things out and make mistakes, and she even gave us a little history lesson about Irish music and talked to us about the Dublin traditional music scene. Next time I am in Dublin, I would love to do another lesson with her! Couldn't recommend highly enough.

Learning how to play the Tin Whistle in a pub in Ireland was a highlight of my trip. Brenda was an expert in her field but made the learning experience very simple. She broke down the songs step-by-step and we left being able to play two Irish songs on the tin whistle. In addition, she shared where we should go to hear the best Irish music being played in Dublin. I highly recommend this experience to anybody interested in Irish music.

This was a great intro class into playing the Irish tin whistle. We got a tiny bit of history and then we jumped right into playing our whistles (you get to keep your whistle). By the end of the class we knew one octave of notes and had played a couple of tunes. Brenda demonstrated how to ornament the notes so they sound like Irish music. She was a patient teacher and I really enjoyed myself!

This experience MADE our last day in Ireland. It was great fun to learn about Irish music (not just the tin whistle), and Brenda did such a fabulous job of making everyone feel welcome. She took her time with each student, and gave us handouts that we could take home to continue to practice. She even gave us resources, if we wish to continue on with the tin whistle, on where to find free continuing lessons. She was even so kind as to direct us to where to search out real, unadulterated, Irish music that evening-faraway from the tourist-laden pubs. As it turned out, we took her recommendation and ended our evening at a pub listening to a group of friends that gathers weekly to talk, laugh, and play. As the only tourists in the room, it was a treat to get a taste of real culture-all thanks to Brenda. I cannot recommend this experience enough, we couldn’t wait to get home to play our tin whistles, it was a highlight of our trip for sure!

This was truly an extraordinary experience for me and my wife. Brenda took us in even on very short notice for which I would like to thank her again. The lesson was fun even though that it required a lot of patience on our teacher's side (At least in my case :D ). Brenda even gave us several great recommendations for places with traditional live music. In return, I can recommend this experience without hesitation. And if you are lucky enough like us, you may even catch this fascinating lady with tremendous voice playing her own gig somewhere around Dublin.
