What you'll do

I welcome you at the entrance of authentic Japanese townhouse, and lead you to a small traditional bench called “machiai”, giving you a rough idea of the steps of your experience. Do not worry about the courtesy or protocols as Sencha-tea ceremony is for enjoying the several extractions of tea leaves, and the time itself where the host and the guests communicate in the comfortable ambiance.
Your curiosity starts from going through the small slide door “Nijiriguchi” to enter the tea room, and sit on the tatami floor surrounded by fantastic ornaments.
Of course, you can request a chair instead of sitting on tatami.
During the whole ceremony, you can freely talk ,ask questions, or take photos.

I will give you a two-minute basic idea of what is “Sencha-do”, then start my tea serving demonstration which you can freely watch or shoot photos. My actions are either for the refinement of body move or purpose of brewing tea in good condition with fullest “umami” extraction. I will mainly explain the latter so you can bring the knack back home. I will make 3 extractions of highest-grade tea called “Gyokuro” with the supreme “umami” taste.
Have your wagashi (Japanese sweet) after the first dense small-portion extraction, then enjoy the changing taste of 2nd and 3rd extraction.
If time allows, one person at every class will have a chance to brew the day's tea by oneself.
Small surprise original gift will be presented for your bringing home.
When finished, we will move to the 2nd floor, which is my antique gallery, and you can appreciate the beauty of Japanese antique artworks.

Did you know about “Sencha-tea ceremony(Sencha-do)”,which is different from “Chanoyu”( serving matcha)? Sencha-do is a traditional way to learn the best procedure to brew roasted tea with a small pot like Japanese do everyday, but in an artistic and practical way . I’m a master of Sencha-do school named “Obakuhigashihonryu” since 15 years, dealing also many Japanese antiques. I am always dressed in Japanese traditional tea master’s costume, invite you to my old townhouse tea room with historical ambiance surrounded antiques. My English is not so fluent, but am prepared with several English guidance materials for your better understanding. The spirit of Sencha-do is to enjoy a conversation over tea, so I will use a portable translator to chat with you over any kind of topics you are curious about. Also I will help you take memorial photos in every steps of your experience.

Where you'll be

My tea room is in a old townhouse hidden behind the modern houses within 2 minutes walk from the station. Tea room is a small world reached through small slide door, but in a traditional Japanese style overlooking small garden through Shoji-door(made of wood and paper) with the sound of water and wind-bell. 2nd floor is my antique gallery of tea things and old artworks, where you can appreciate the history and tradition of Nara.
