What you'll do

This is a long walk, including a few tram rides, moving around in the city center as well as in its outskirts. Prague is full of places of worship of various denominations, churches, monasteries, synagogues, and cemeteries. What do we know about them? Why is Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral located in the middle of the castle, and what does this have to do with a pagan sanctuary in Northern Germany? Where does the gothic come from? What role did the Vikings play? What about the rotundas in four locations in Prague? Why is Eastern Europe devoted to Orthodox Christianity, and what does this have to do with Prague, Ann of Bohemia, John Vycliff, Richard II, Hus, and Luther? Was St. Nepomuk a martyr or a victim of the fight between emperor and pope? What is the story behind the Loreta sanctuary? What was the role of Baroque in a Protestant country? What does “Old New Synagogue” really mean? What about the little wooden church, hidden in Kinsky Park? What is Beuronic? Religion has turned this country upside down many times since its inception. Bohemia played a crucial role in the religious history of Europe and the world. And all that we can see—if one knows how to discover it.

Guenther

Since I came to Prague, I've been always interested in looking beyond the pretty facades and the impressive architecture. My studies made me understand how much religion played a role in the history of this city as well as Europe. Churches, monasteries, synagogues, and cemeteries are almost eternal witnesses of all those developments—they speak in a coded language, and I want to translate these fascinating messages for you. I assure you, you will see this city in a totally different light.
