Our experience with Emilio and Yaima was so much more than we could have hoped for. We started the day with coffee in their living room, and an in-depth discussion of the practices/beliefs associated with the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria. Emilio has reached the highest level of Santeria, known as a Babalawo, so his knowledge and ability to answer any questions we had was very impressive. Emilio and Yaima do not speak English but they provided a very proficient translator who seemed to be thorough, and quite knowledgeable herself. Later we moved into another room, filled with objects of importance in the religion, and began the soap-making process. This was a very satisfying, hands-on experience where we learned more about the connection between Santeria and elements of the natural world. After soap-making we moved into the dining room where Yaima had lovingly prepared a delicious traditional Cuban meal for us all to enjoy together. While eating we got to know each other on a more personal level and made a meaningful connection with our hosts. We left that day with a much deeper understanding of Afro-Cuban religion, a feeling of connection to Cuban culture, and a full belly. We would highly recommend this excursion.

Best cultural/spiritual experience in Havana! I knew when I booked this experience that it would be one that would stay with me forever. I was in search of something that could give me a better understanding of Afro Cuban religion and also one where I could have a home cooked meal! This exceeded expectations. Emilio and Yaima are the sweetest people! They even had an interpreter there so nothing was lost in translation. You learn about Emilio and how he became Babalawo in the Yorùbá religion and Yaima is santeria too. You learn about the plants and their medicinal properties along with making the actual soap. After you eat a delicious meal that Yaima lovingly has prepared. We were lucky because my friend who was going through a very hard time in her life, was able to have a card reading done by Yaima after lunch. You could tell that Emilio and Yaima were energetically intuitive and they really helped my friend find the light. Their home temple is amazing and you can’t beat the views from their cute patio! You will never have another experience in Cuba like this one. If you are interested in good people, good food and a cultural experience I would definitely book this! They are also on Instagram jabonesafrocubanos . I left with a full belly , a full heart and clean hands!

This was a great experience. Yaima y Emilio really took time to get to know me. They asked me why I chose this tour and personalized it to my reason. I learned a lot about the religion, plants and soap making. The lunch was delicious and more than I could possibly eat! They went above and beyond in our conversations and I truly felt like a new friend.

So much fun! I loved that we were able to participate and get our hands dirty! Being able to take home a bar of soap that you made from scratch felt amazing as well. Oh and let's not forget lunch ... best food we had while in Havana. One thing I would suggest is making sure you have a way to get back to your airbnb. It was pretty difficult getting a cab back home in this area.
