What you'll do

There's a little history and trivia included, but this is mostly a chance to experience the recent regeneration of parts of the Johannesburg city centre, so there's a focus on street stalls, a market, cafes, public art, graffiti and a rooftop bar or two - for a drink, and for the view. We begin at Arts on Main, a group of renovated liquor warehouses, and we amble through the streets of Maboneng enjoying the sights and sounds of the hawkers and curio sellers, the smell of Ethopian coffee and street food, a Sunday market, a couple of hotels, an independent cinema, a former printing press, a book shop, a recording studio, a block of flats made from renovated shipping containers, an urban gym.... and all along the way, there's a chance to soak up the public art and graffiti which defines the area. One of the hotels en route is called Hallmark House, which was designed by the internationally-renowned British-Tanzanian architect Sir David Adjaye. It has a jazz club in the basement, and a brand-new bar on the roof, so there'll be a chance to stop here for a gin & tonic, refreshing ale or cool drink; well deserved as part of your walk.

Learn more about Sarah

Sarah

After gaining a BSc. (Hons) degree at Cardiff University, I gained my global tourism experience in educational tours, ski tours and incentive travel. I operated my own business in the incentive travel field for 8 years. When age 40 hit, I relinquished overseas journeys and settled into tour guiding in Johannesburg, which has been my home since 1992. I am passionate about showing both the everyday and the hidden Johannesburg to visitors. My passions include music, literature and art, and I am able to incorporate these themes into my walking tours of the city. ‘One thing I wish I’d understood in school is that the word History is simply a contraction of the words His Story; it’s just someone’s story! Now I act as a story-teller, bringing the history and culture of Johannesburg to life in a fun and informative way.

Where you'll be

There are some little gems of cafes, shops and art galleries to be found on this Maboneng route. One bar and hotel is housed in a former printing press; there's a bookshop in the garden of a 1903 hotel, and there's recording studio inside a clothes shop in the Museum of African Design. Visit a flat at Drivelines, an apartment block made out of renovated shipping containers. Plus there are 3 rooftop bars to visit along the way. Cheers!

More tips

Don't be afraid of Johannesburg's reputation for crime. Yes, there are hotspots, but you'll be in good hands, and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. It's a city with a tough past and a big heart, great energy and a vibrant art, music and restaurant culture. Come and explore!
