About your host

I fell in love with Jane Austen as a teenager, before reading English Literature at Oxford, after which I trained as an actor and then became a writer. What we’ll do

The afternoon will start with an accessible introduction to Jane Austen given by a university lecturer. It won't matter if you have never read a word of Jane Austen before, or you know her cannon by heart, as it will be tailored to whoever comes. This will be followed by tea (both black and green – with cream – such as Jane herself kept locked from the servants and served herself) with Regency…

What else you should know

Bedford is a very easy (35 minute) train journey from St Pancras: the station is a few minutes' walk from Observatory House, and the bus stop (X5 bus) even closer. There is plenty of parking nearby.

Where you'll be

The afternoon will take place in the historic Observatory House in Bedford, built as a family home in 1825 (named after the impressive Observatory erected in 1827) and still very much a family home today. Lovingly restored by its present owners Observatory House, with its open fires and candlelit rooms, its musical instruments and portraits on the walls, will transport you back to Jane's gentle world. But beware... you may never want to leave!
