What you'll do

We will meet at the farmers market to select the fresh produce we need to cook with. I will introduce you to some of the vendors and will share some historic factors and developments in agriculture that have impacted our gastronomy. We will meet back at my house (5 minutes away) where we will enjoy my signature rum fun punch and start cooking the way my grandmother used to cook, with fresh local ingredients and a pinch of Love! We will sit at the table to eat togehter. After lunch, I will offer puertorican coffee, and locally made desert at the porch.
The menu is farm to table based on availability of seasonal ingredients.
Please make sure to communicate any dietary restrictions or sugestions ahead of time since I may not be able to please last minute requests.
Note: Contact me to accommodate a date not scheduled or if you are traveling solo since I may have availability not reflected here. This experience is interactive intended for like minded foodies and is usually offered for lunch but private groups could be arranged for early dinner skipping the farmers market visit.
Please inquire about a Private Chef event with Cooking with Nivia: You may find me as Pirvate Chef San Juan in G or inquire at CookingwithniviaatG.

I’m a foodie and nature lover proud to have been born and raised in this small island surrounded by a big ocean. As a trained Culinarian and a nutrition educator I love to share my passion for our cuisine, our culture and the resiliency of our people. I graduated from Johnson and Wales University and worked at Share our Strength/Cooking Matters/No Kid Hungry teaching families how to shop and cook healthy and delicious on limited resources. Hurricane Maria was a wake up call for me and other puertorricans who realized we import 85% of what we consume. It then became clear that in order to achieve food security, we must have a sustainable agriculture. As a Chef and Agroecology promoter, I introduce guests to our unique and delicious cuisine utilizing products cultivated by farmers who work hard to reestablish our local agriculture.

This is a must-do in San Juan. My friends and I prefer small, local experiences to tourist traps, and this was perfect for us. We learned a lot about local agriculture/sustainability efforts and the history of Puerto Rican food, went to a fabulous farmer’s market with Nivia as our guide, cooked an amazing meal, and hung out on Nivia’s balcony drinking and listening to her stories and sharing ours. Nivia is a phenomenal human, host, and chef. You won’t regret doing this. Nivia is also super LGBTQ friendly.

Absolutely the best experience. Great for foodies who want to learn about culture, history, and sustainability. Nivia was an amazing host and her space is beyond beautiful. We laughed so much and I learned a lot. The market was a cool experience, because she tells you some history and then is able to identify produce I would have never known what was what. Nivia had a great relationship with the vendors at the market, as I can imagine she has with everyone she meets. Honestly, I’d do this experience over and over again. I can’t wait to come back with my partner. Nivia is accommodating to allergies as well. The rum punch definitely packed a punch. We all left stuffed and so happy. Worth every penny, and more. I can’t even put into words how lovely this experience is. Book this for a hands on experience that will leave you feeling so blessed.

We loved our experience with nivia! It was our favorite part of the trip! Nivia gave an overview about puerto rican cuisine, food history and the industry! She is apart of the farm to table movement in puerto rico and has extensive training and experience which makes her an expert in this feild. She truly loves what she does and puts a lot of hard work into it. She showed us many new fruits and vegetables at the market, prepared earlier for our meal and was very considerate of our dietary restrictions and interests on what we wanted to cook. My sister and I are foodies and if you identify as a foodie then you can’t leave san juan without this experience. She is very professional, teaches very well and the food was amazing. Nivia was very warm, friendly and fun to get to know! We 100% would do the experience again when we are back in puerto rico.

Chef Nivia made our trip to Puerto Rico! She is so awesome and the experience was educational, interactive, fun, and very authentic! I would recommend this to any person who is interested in cooking or learning about Puerto Rican cuisine. This was the best gift I could have given my mother!

We can’t say enough about this experience. Not only did we learn about the culture we also learned about the local agriculture and became aware of the opportunities Puerto Rico has. Visiting the local farmers market was a great experience. We learned first hand how local farmers help support the people as opposed to importing goods. Chef Nivia was very warm, knowledgeable and prepared her home for a delicious meal. She explained everything and was accommodating. We will definitely use the skills we learned. We are so grateful we booked this experience. My husband and I feel more knowledgeable and inspired to cook Puerto Rican cuisine! Pa que tu sepa lol
