What you'll do

Our class will be personally tailored to your skill and comfort level.

Typically, we'll start out with a quick safety lesson and overview of blacksmithing knowledge.

We'll then move on to a demonstration/tutorial on basic blacksmithing techniques.

Next, you'll get to step into the shop and build something yourself.

At the end of the day, you'll have hammered out your very own hand-forged object (made from salvaged materials) that you can take home with you.

Be prepared to get hot and dirty, bring clothes that you don't mind staining with coal and sturdy, close-toed shoes/boots.

We'll provide the tools and materials, you provide the muscle.
Other things to note
We also have a cabin rental available on site. Make a weekend out of it and stay with us after your workshop. Contact us for a package discount, https://airbnb.com/h/drewsey

My husband, Tom, will be your host. He's a true Renaissance man; he's been a cowboy, a logger, a businessman, a pastor, a father, and can fix or build just about anything. He prefers working with metal and, as a blacksmith, creating all kinds of functional art.

Where you'll be

We conduct our workshop in the smithy we built from juniper timbers that we personally salvaged from local conservation projects.

Most of the tools and materials that we will work with are salvaged and repurposed, being saved from a landfill to live on as functional art.

We had so much fun working with Tom in the Blacksmith shop or “Smithy”. He was kind and patient with us newbies and we left with some unique treasures and the experience of a lifetime. I especially enjoyed and appreciated Tom’s philosophy on sustainability and how it relates to making art and functional objects. This mindset is evident all over the workshop and the property in general. This is a really special place bursting with the warmth of family and community in a beautiful, quiet little corner of Eastern Oregon. We will certainly be back to stay at the cabin and take more classes with Tom his cool apprentice team!
