Southwold's secret geography

Southwold, United Kingdom

What you'll do

The 'Southwold secret geography tour' provides guests with an insight into the changes and challenges facing this popular seaside town.

We'll explain the processes by which the sea shapes the dynamic coastline here and how the ongoing threat of storm surges and erosion are managed. You'll hear about how one local resident attempted to save his home from erosion by constructing his own DIY sea defences and witness the legacy that this has created.

We'll visit some of the streets where renovation and gentrification is evident as we reveal the extent of second-home ownership within the town and consider how this is changing Southwold. We'll stop at the major regenerated projects, including the pier, Tibby's triangle and the Southwold hospital, before providing a history of the high street and it's changing identity and function.

On completion of the tour you'll have a much greater understanding of Southwold as a place and the changes and challenges which it faces.
Other things to note
We will be walking for around 1 and a half hours so make sure your shoes are comfortable and that you are dressed appropriately for the weather. Its fine to take the walk at your own pace and we can stop for a take-away coffee / ice cream along the way!

We deliver courses to hundreds of school, sixth form and university students each year sharing our expertise on the changing coastline, function and demographics of the town. Thank so much to Chris for our guided tour of Southwold. He gave lots of information about the geography of Southwold, the regeneration and gentrification of different areas, the coastal landscape and the different coastal management methods, and food for thought with future fieldwork and NEAs! A must experience for any Geography teacher in the area on holiday!
