What you'll do

Hike Edinburgh’s amazing city peak - all 822ft (251m) of Arthur’s Seat - for jaw-dropping city views and chat with avid local hillwalker, Paul. Group size limited to 8.

What makes this walk? Well, we start and finish on foot in the very heart of the Old Town - we get a glimpse of the macabre, cobbled alleyways that seem to run in every direction in the Old Town, but we enjoy a real hike up a wee beauty of a hill.

Meeting outside St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile we head down narrow "closes" & “wynds”, under South Bridge, on past the city walls. We hike 1 mile (1.6km) to Arthur's Seat summit on gravelly dirt paths, and up steps cut into the hill - 500ft (150m) of steep ascent. I'll share the quirkiest, unlikeliest stories, human, animal, mineral or plant-based, that emanate from this aged but awesome lava pile.

Up top we enjoy a locally-sourced energy bar, water, 360º views of city, Forth estuary, hills, mountains, near and far. On our descent, we witness a romantic, ruined, clifftop chapel and a quaint loch. Re-entering the Old Town from the east, we take in the Canongate and the Netherbow, each with their own secrets, and a fragment of the ancient city walls. Finish back at our start point.

You need good level of fitness; firm footwear (walking shoes or boots) with good tread; waterproof jacket. Windy at top, so bring extra layer. Total distance walked: 4 miles (6km).

I've been lucky enough to live in Edinburgh for over 3 decades and I love this most unusual of towns. I'm an experienced hillwalker, a professional tour guide, with a degree in literature and language, and a diploma in music. I've worked for many years in tourism, organising and leading tours all over Scotland. I've been going up and down the more modest hills of the British Isles for over 40 years and I'd love to have the chance to share my enthusiasm for Edinburgh's landscape and culture with you on this wonderful walk.

Where you'll be

We pass under the 19th century South Bridge and learn about its unusual design.

In the area known as the Pleasance we see the 16th Century Flodden Wall.

We climb extinct volcano, Arthur's Seat, via the steep zigzag, stopping for photos. We enjoy a snack at the summit, and come down via The Dasses to the medieval ruins of a chapel. We also stop at a small lake.

We walk along the Royal Mile, seeing the facades of historic buildings and walls.

If you are thinking of booking... BOOK this experience with Paul. A superhost rightly so! Arthur's seat is so amazing, a great climb and not too strenuous. Paul is a very charming host, super knowledgeable and very attentive. I didn't feel rushed or pressured to go faster or slower; we took frequent stops and a good laugh and chat the whole way. Definitely would recommend!

Paul’s tour is a great time! It was very much like taking a hike with your very knowledgeable friend who warns you when you’re about to step into a more slippery area. My personal favorite was that he also took great pictures 😊 highly recommend!

Paul is great, very knowledgeable and can answer all sorts of questions about the city. He is also great at making sure the (somewhat treacherous) walk back down is safe!
