What you'll do

Come and visit, one of Scotland's leading hand loom weavers who has been designing and making his own wearable woven cloth since 1997.

Weaving under the business name of PickOne, James Donald weaves fabric with a distant Scottish story. His award winning pieces have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, all of which have been hand woven on a 32 shaft computerised Megado, which marries contemporary technology with a tradition that is thousands of years old.

With customers ranging from Hollywood "A" listers and British 80's electro royalty, this is an excellent opportunity to come and visit his studio space in central Leith down by the Shore area and see where all the creativity happens in making his hand woven work.

There will be demonstrations on how a hand loom works, there is usually a warp on the computerised loom, so whatever stage in the process the warp is at, there will always be something to view/discuss!

There will also be an opportunity to view various hand woven items and products.

Tea/coffee will be served through out.

James had a very unique space with various types of weaving. He is very passionate about his craft and was very informative about techniques, supplies and where to order materials. Also a range of course can be taken to accommodate anyone from a novice to expert weaver.

James is an artist! He was able to explain and demonstrate the elements of weaving to me. His studio is full of his beautiful work and also the works-in-progress of his many students. I learned about different types of yarns and the various textures and colors of yarns. It was a very educational and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this experience to anyone going to Edinburgh.

I absolutely loved this experience of visiting James's weaving studio! He is a master weaver and designer on the one hand, and on the other hand a humble, patient, and supportive teacher. James's communications from my initial query through to booking and his subsequent timely follow-up message to remind me of the booking and logistics of how to find the studio were all very clear, friendly, and professional. This was a great opportunity for me to learn a little bit about weaving from James and should I return again, I would love to take weaving classes with him, too. I highly recommend James's weaving studio tour at Pick One!
