What you'll do

The NY Times recently recommended this experience in their list of top things to do Honolulu. Forbes named our walks one of the "incredible once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences that should be on every intrepid traveler's bucket list."

On the verdant grounds of the Lyon Arboretum, you'll leave behind the stresses of the world and get in touch with the healing powers of Hawaii's forests. As we move slowly and attentively through less than a mile of easy trail, I'll offer a series of “invitations” to help you reconnect with nature and with yourself. There'll also be opportunities to share what you're noticing with other participants and to sit in quiet contemplation.

"Forest Bathing" (translated from "shinrin yoku," an established public health practice in Japan) is a growing global wellness movement backed by more than 30 years of scientific research on the physical and psychological benefits of immersing in nature.

Lyon Arboretum and Forest Bathing Hawaiʻi follow CDC and State of Hawaiʻi protocols to protect you and others from COVID-19. Face coverings and physical distancing throughout the experience are required. The Arboretum's gate is opened for a very limited window and arrival before or after those times will be denied. Restrooms are not available at the Arboretum.
Other things to note
No restrooms at Lyon Arboretum. Free parking.

Aloha! I'm Hawaii's first and only Forest Therapy Guide, trained and CERTIFIED by the Association of Nature & Forest Therapy Guides and Programs. Iʻve now led more than 180 forest bathing walks. My family has lived in Mānoa Valley (where I guide) for more than 60 years. This land holds so many memories for me and now I hope to create some special memories for you. My background in the arts and communication, and my love of the outdoors, helps me bring you to your own unique experience of nature.

Phyllis is a wonderful leader for this forest bathing experience. Through multiple guided invitations, I was able to connect with nature and be present in the now. We moved slowly through the forest and field of the arboretum igniting all of our senses. We were invited to share our experience with the others in the group which formed connections with the environment as well as this small group of humans. I highly recommend this experience!

We really enjoyed this interesting and unique experience. It was all about connecting with nature, putting away phones, cameras, etc., and really focusing on being present and in the moment. At first, I had a little trouble trying to calm my mind and meditate, but, eventually, I was able to get there. The location was gorgeous and the host was extremely knowledgeable. When we asked if she had any recommendations for other things we should do or see in the area, she went the extra mile, and emailed us a list later that same day. Overall, I’d recommend this experience to anyone interested in nature or anyone who wants to escape the world of screens and constant stimulation for a little while.
