What you'll do

Practice the art of pen and ink and eat cake in a retro café

Oh hello, it's me, Alice! Come and join me for a joyous morning on the cobbled streets of East London learning how to create your very own beautiful lettering.

We'll start off with a splendid cup of tea and a slice of cake while introduce you to the world of Modern Calligraphy. I'll share all my most important tips and tricks, how to use my most favourite supplies, then we'll get to the most important bit, practicing!

This is a beginner's workshop, starting from scratch, we will start with practice exercises, then move on to letterforms and by the end of the session I'll show you how to connect the letters and write your name - it's not as easy as it looks, but it's very relaxing to learn!

Everything you use in the class is exactly the same as what I professionally use, and you get to take it all home so you can practice your new skill!
Alice even provides her 'Master List' of favourite stores and websites to give you plenty of inspiration and a wealth of sneaky calligraphy secrets.

Alice also teaches the same class at a different venue, 'Learn Calligraphy with Alice Gabb'.

I work full time from my little studio in East London as a Lettering Artist and Modern Calligrapher.
I graduated from Art School ten years ago and have been working as an artist ever since. In the early days I sold my hand printed stationery at Broadway Market in Hackney (do visit if you haven't been!) and that led to many exciting press features, and eventually a range with Anthropologie. I was amongst the first handful of artists to learn Modern Calligraphy in the UK, and I've done many courses since with some of my favourite lettering masters. We all have a different and unique approach!
There is absolutely nothing I love more than showing you my favourite hang-outs in London where I can share all my tips and tricks with you over some tea and cake.

Where you'll be

We'll be in the back of Vintage Heaven, a glorious haven of retro tea sets and glass ware. You'll find it on Columbia Road which is most famous for its Sunday flower market. It's a picture-perfect cobbled street full of independent galleries and shops, winning a TimeOut award for three years running. All within walking distance from design-lovers Shoreditch and vintage shopping heaven on Brick Lane.

A lovely few hours learning a new skill under the expert guidance of Alice. Alice was clear, patient, and provided wonderful materials to help us practice and improve our calligraphy. The cake and tea were delicious too!

Alice’s workshop was just wonderful! Being a complete newbie to Calligraphy, I didn’t know quite what to expect, but the flow of the workshop meant that everyone could work at their own pace and rhythm Alice made sure she spent equal time with each of us, sharing unique tips and tricks and sharing her encyclopaedic knowledge with us on all aspects of calligraphy to kick off. It was such a lovely warm environment, thanks to Alice and the setting in the gorgeous Townhouse. Oh and did I mention there’s cake?! Would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in learning Modern Calligraphy!

My friend and I really enjoyed ourselves at Alice's workshop and would highly recommend it. The time flew by and we could have easily sat there all weekend eating cake and practising letters! Alice is so friendly and patient and really knows her stuff! The setting was lovely too - fantastic cake and friendly staff at the venue :) We were able to take home a starter kit to continue practising and Alice also provided a useful little guide of the local area to explore after the workshop finished which was a nice touch. Thank you Alice!
