What you'll do

Beads are tiny works of wearable art with roots in every culture. This is a casual, workshop/story-telling session about the history, design + use of beads. It's very hands-on. First you'll see samples of the natural and man-made materials used over the centuries in bead-making. Then we'll look at vintage and contemporary jewelry from many countries, spiritual traditions + artisans. You'll see men and women's spirit beads, children's beads, vintage tourist and designer pieces, weird and wonderful beads, romantic beads and 'danger' beads. Get ready for photo ops when people try things on! This is a fascinating experience for everyone. After all, both men and women have used beads for trade, artistry, adornment and lots more since 100,000 BCE. And they still compel, captivate and make us look great. No prior knowledge of beads is necessary! Come on your own or with family/friends. It's a fun event. Before or afterwards you could visit nearby Riley Park. You’ll find an innovative community garden + a great Farmer's Market that's open Saturdays, 10 am - 2 pm year-round. Enjoy produce, samples, treats, crafts and more. Several of Vancouver's famous food trucks are always there.

We're back! I'm a former TV host / reporter who's fascinated with how people around world adorn themselves. My curiosity about gemstone, metal, wood, fabric, shell + bone beads led to years of collecting them. You'll see beautiful, rare, whimsical and powerful beads from multiple eras and cultures. You'll hear background stories that are incredible, inspiring, tragic, vibrant + funny. In fact, the story of beads is the story of human history. It's fun meeting + sharing info with people from elsewhere, hearing their lives + experiences, and discovering commonalities. I hope to meet you too.

Where you'll be

We'll meet at a charming vintage house, and the bead studio is nestled in the garden. The studio building, which dates back to the early farming days of Vancouver, is now a bright, spirited, creative space that's filled with bead-related items and comfy seating. The studio is cozy and warm in the winter, and in hot weather the doors and windows are opened for lovely garden breezes.
