What you'll do

Golden Age of Dutch Art at the National Gallery in London

At the National Gallery, we will travel through the history of European art, focusing on the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age (Seventeenth-century) and Impressionists in particular. Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Rachel Ruysch and their Flemish counterparts, Rubens and Van Dyck, are just a few artists we will be looking at. We will then spend some time looking at the excellent selection of work by Cezanne, Monet, Renoir, Picasso and others we can describe as the first truly modern artists, all of whom sought inspiration in the Northern art of the past.

From the Impressionist to the Abstractionist, the Dutch Golden Age was highly influential. Hopefully, after these 90 minutes spent together, you will leave with a deeper understanding of what the art of Old Masters was all about, and why it was so important for the development of the modern art that followed.

It is not unusual to feel confused by a piece of art. When we see an old painting, we are not just looking; we are reading the language of images. Hopefully, during the course of this Experience, you will acquire the skills of looking, seeing and talking about art.

To ensure the smooth running of this experience, both the host and the guests are obliges to wear a face mask and encouraged to use the hand sanitiser provided by the gallery.

Any levels welcome, the Experience is easily tailored.

Hi, my name is Julia, I am a professional photographer, an art historian and a founder of www.nejasartwalks.com, a bespoke provider of the art-related experiences in London (IG @nejasartwalks).

During my Master's degree, I majored in the art of Impressionism and Dutch Golden Age, as well as contemporary photography. I previously worked as a Collection Research Assistant at Tate and now I am hosting one of the most successful Art Experiences in London.

I love sharing my passion for art and I spend most of my free time visiting exhibitions, reading and discussing art.

Where you'll be

The National Gallery is the unique place to learn the story of European art, masterpiece by masterpiece. Unlike comparable museums in continental Europe, nationalizing an existing royal or princely art collection did not form the National Gallery. It came into being when the British government bought the 38 initial paintings. The collection is small in size, compared with many European national galleries, but encyclopedic in scope.

This experience is very unique and open my world to me. I have no knowledge about art so i never enjoy the art museum. But i start to learn more and enjoy more, thank to Julia.

A tour with Julia was great! She is very knowledgeable and I learned a lot from her during our visit at National Gallery. It changes the way I look at paintings and art in general. Our tour actually made me stay longer at the gallery (though I have been there before). Highly recommend if you're in London!

What a FANTASTIC experience! Julia is passionate about art and has the gift of story-telling as well. I'll never look at the old Dutch masters in quite the same way again. She pointed out details that may not be evident to the casual viewer and explained why that specific period in art was so important in art history. What was nice too is that she doesn't just "lecture" but engages you in conversation and observation -- you are encouraged to express what you see and ask questions and share your point of view. I'd highly recommend this experience.

Julia is so knowledgeable about Art. Tony and I know nothing about how to appreciate artwork. We are happy that we attended her tour and broadened our horizon in terms of understanding what ideas a piece of art conveys. We really appreciate Julia took us around the museum explaining artwork in excruciating details. We would highly recommend her tour!!!

I wish we could’ve spent the whole day with Julia. Her knowledge and her enthusiasm for the art made for a most interesting experience. I thought I knew a lot about classical paintings but she added an element that I had never even considered. I highly recommend her for anyone who wants to explore the National Gallery.
