What you'll do

A sewing class with local designer-maker Ruth, which has her own label Roobedo (est 1999).
Here you will make a Harris tweed 'Spinner' to take away as a momento of your trip, learning how to sew and hearing about the beautiful Harris tweed cloth and its origin.
In the Roobedo studio, you will have access to an amazing assortment of Harris tweed & will be guided through the process to make yourself a unique Roobedo Spinner for your home, which will feature your very own motto to remember your holiday to Scotland. This 2.5 hour class is suitable for all ages, and even if you haven't ever used a sewing machine before, Roobedo will have all the equipment and expertise to help you.
Harris tweed is an ancient Scottish cloth woven in the Outer Hebrides and Roobedo uses it to make her collections of clothing and homeware which are available online at roobedo.com. The tweed comes in a variety of beautiful colours, for you to choose.
You will spend your time selecting and arranging colours, cutting leaf shapes and then stitching on domestic sewing machines into a string with a hanging loop.
Over a cup of tea, you will have the opportunity to write a few words, a list of favourite things, a line from a poem - something that really means something to you. This will then be transferred onto heat transfer paper and finally added to the spinner along with a Harris tweed label.
Other things to note
No previous experience of sewing is necessary. All sewers welcome. Park outside or walk up from Pitlochry in 20 mins or so - it is uphill but worth the view - and stop at the Moulin Hotel afterwards for a coffee or lunch.

Running my own clothing and homeware label 'Roobedo' for over 20 years, I have also been teaching sewing for over 20 years, to small groups and big groups! I lecture part time at Dundee & Angus College and have run Roobedo workshops for Zerowaste Scotland, The Edinburgh Remakery and Cimate cafe Birnam. I love Harris tweed - the cloth from the Outer Hebrides and I use it in my collections, keeping every last scrap which is perfect for little projects. The 'Spinner' is based on a Hebrides inspired decoration which spins a yarn :) You will cut leaves of Harris tweed, stitch on to cotton tape with a hanging loop at each end for easy use. These are made from re-purposed scraps with a motto printed on random leaves. The finished spinner can be hung in a window or a doorway to brighten any room, or even in the garden!

Where you'll be

My roadside studio is in the quaint hamlet of Moulin, nestled at the foot of Ben Vrackie. You will be immersed in a world of cloth, yarn and sewing machines. The space is small but beautiful, crammed with textiles, collections and found objects combed from beaches in the Hebrides. You will see how I work as a designer maker & the Moulin Hotel is a perfect spot for lunch afterwards. 15 min walk up from Pitlochry, 30 mins walk from the station.
