What you'll do

Haul up the sails! Take the tiller! Or just chill out with a Rum Punch or Deacon Stormy while our historic schooner slides through Salem Sound past lighthouses, forts, and waterfront homes. The captain and crew will explain the significance of the FAME, privateering, and the War of 1812. The firing of the cannon is always a highlight!

We'll motor out from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem and then call for volunteers to help raise the sails. Once the sails are up, depending on the wind, we may shape a course toward Beverly... or Marblehead... or head straight out toward the islands!

Our interactive crew point out landmarks, explain the operation of the schooner, and mix drinks with equal facility!

The sails last roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. When we return to Pickering Wharf, you're right in the heart of downtown Salem — perfectly placed for a meal, a drink, or a stroll!

Other things to note
We will not sail if steady rain, high winds, or thick fog are expected. Call ahead if you are unsure about the weather. Dress for the weather — you are exposed to the elements on our 1812 schooner! This is not a cruise ship or passenger ferry!

This trip is not appropriate for infants or toddlers. But once kids are 4-5 years old, they really enjoy it!

I've been sailing for 40 years now, was hands-on with the building of our traditional wooden schooner in 2003, and recently spent three winters cruising the Eastern Caribbean. When I'm working, I'm sailing... and when I'm playing, I'm sailing! I am equally passionate about history, having minored in history at Penn and later written two books about privateering and the War of 1812. I've presented at nearly one hundred events, symposiums, and conferences. Recently, I was named Chair of Salem's Port Authority, tasked with remaking Salem's waterfront for the next century.

Where you'll be

We'll be sailing on the historic waters of Salem Sound. Every trip is different, since we shape our course to take advantage of the wind that day. Sometimes we sail toward Beverly... sometimes toward Marblehead... sometimes straight out toward the islands!

This trip was perfect, we had great wind for a great sail and it is very spacious - there was 18 of us on my trip. The captain and crew gave great knowledge and even let us raise the sails with them and steer. Drinks were available for a reasonable price and I would def go sailing with them again, what a great way to end my trip in Boston with a beautiful sail in Salem! 12/10 would recommend!

The schooner fame was awesome. They fired a cannon on the trip and showed us around the Salem sound. Don’t worry it is equipped with alcohol and snacks in case you get hungry / bored.

Fun if you have never been sailing. I expected to be lower to the water and to see more water of right around the boat.

It was pretty hot the day we went with not much wind. But we are used to that with sailing. It was still a great time and we loved being on the water. The boat is beautiful. The crew very nice and the beers cold! :) Highlights were seeing some really big beautiful houses and the cannon!
