What you'll do

Haul up the sails! Take the tiller! Or just chill out with a Rum Punch or Deacon Stormy while our historic schooner slides through Salem Sound past lighthouses, forts, and waterfront homes. The captain and crew will explain the significance of the FAME, privateering, and the War of 1812. The firing of the cannon is always a highlight! We'll set out from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem, motor out a short distance, and then call for volunteers to help raise the sails. Once the sails are up, depending on the wind, we may shape a course toward Beverly... or Marblehead... or head straight out toward the islands! Our interactive crew point out landmarks, explain the operation of the schooner, and mix drinks with equal facility! The sails last an hour and forty minutes. When we return to Pickering Wharf, you're right in the heart of downtown Salem — perfectly placed for a meal, a drink, or a stroll!

Learn more about Michael

Michael

I've been sailing for 40 years now, was hands-on with the building of our traditional wooden schooner in 2003, and recently spent three winters cruising the Eastern Caribbean. When I'm working, I'm sailing... and when I'm playing, I'm sailing! I am equally passionate about history, having minored in history at Penn and later written two books about privateering and the War of 1812. I've presented at nearly one hundred events, symposiums, and conferences. Recently, I was named Chair of Salem's Port Authority, tasked with remaking Salem's waterfront for the next century.

Where you'll be

We'll be sailing on the historic waters of Salem Sound. Every trip is different, since we shape our course to take advantage of the wind that day. Sometimes we sail toward Beverly... sometimes toward Marblehead... sometimes straight out toward the islands!

Activity advisory

Outdoor activities carry risks, and you may be exposed to dangerous situations as part of this experience. Make sure you can participate safely given your abilities and the conditions (such as location, weather, and equipment).

Things to keep in mind

Cancellation policy

Any experience can be cancelled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 7 days before the experience starts.

Communication policy

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside the Airbnb website or app.

Guest requirements

Up to 7 guests ages 6 and up can attend. No previous experience is necessary, and the boat is big and stable so that motion sickness is very rarely an issue.

Alcohol

This experience includes alcohol. Only guests who meet the legal drinking age will be served alcoholic beverages.

What to bring

Comfortable shoes, a light jacket or sweatshirt (it's usually cooler on the water), and sunglasses — and your camera or cell phone!

More tips

The trip is weather dependent — we will not sail if steady rain, high winds, or thick fog are expected. Call ahead if you are unsure about the weather. Dress for whatever the weather offers — you are exposed to the elements on our 1812 schooner! This is not a cruise ship or passenger ferry!
