What you'll do

You'll enjoy a leisurely yet lively half-day exploring the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Portugal's southern coastline. Our journey will begin on the beach of the old fishing village Burgau, voted in 2010 as the "quaintest beachside village" in Europe, often referred to as "the Santorini of Portugal." After a meander through the labyrinth of old cobbled streets, we'll climb out of the village and onto the famed "Fisherman's Trail", heading West along some of the most wild and well-preserved coastline in all of Europe. The trail will take us up and over cliffs and bluffs with stunning views of the coastline and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, and drop us down onto unspoiled sandy beaches. We'll make a stop at the historic Fort of Almádena, constructed in 1632 on a cliff 78 metres above the sea to protect the area’s tuna fishery from the attacks of privateers and pirates. Our coastal hike will conclude at picturesque Salema, another old beachside fishing village, where we will catch the locals' bus back to our starting point in Burgau. Our time together exploring Portugal's majestic southern coast will be both informative and invigorating, and will leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired.
Other things to note
This hike is pretty strenuous, with ups and downs, loose terrain in places, and lots of exposure; it is suitable for all people of any age with a relative level of physical fitness.
