Escape the City with a Mountain Leader

Edimburgo, United Kingdom

Experience hosted by Robert E.

  1. 7 hours
  2. Hosted in English, German, Spanish and Portuguese

What you'll do

We'll hike to the highest point in the Pentlands Regional Park "Scald Law" at 579 m.a.s.l. or 1,900 feet above sea level where you'll have an impressive 360° view of the Lothian region and all its mountain ranges. During to the whole experience you'll learn about the local history and wildlife, while enjoying the best views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth!

The length of the hike is of 13 Kms (8 Miles) and a total elevation gain of 600 metres. The terrain that we'll encounter during our hike consists mainly on well-maintained packed dirt footpaths but we'll also walk on tarmac roads.

The itinerary goes as follows:
8:00 am: We'll meet at the Scott Monument.
8:20 am: Time to take a regional bus to head out of the city.
9:00 am: We'll start the hike at Flotterstone Inn.
11:30 am: Time of arrival to the summit of Scald Law. Weather permitting we can enjoy the view and a small snack for a few minutes.
1:00 pm: Time of arrival to Flotterstone Inn.

Having done this ascent numerous times I recommend the above itinerary. The difficulty of the hike is considered to be between leisurely and moderate depending on the experience and fitness level of the participants.
Other things to note
The experience is also available in Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

Hi! I’m a mountain leader from Mexico who adopted Scotland as his home. Since discovering my passion for the outdoors I have spent every free minute in the mountains. I started by conducting expeditions as a guide assistant to the Mexican Alpine Club and on my own. In 2016 I came to Edinburgh to study an MSc in Outdoor Education. I have organised trekking expeditions in England, Scotland, Norway, and Iceland, and led travel education programmes in Peru (Andes) and Belize. I’m a certified Wilderness First Responder and COVID Officer, trained to tend to emergency situations in remote locations and to adhere to new COVID prevention measures. In 2019 I led successful hikes in Mexico on Airbnb experiences almost exclusively with 5-star reviews. Now I spend my time in the Scottish Highlands training for my British Mountain Leader qualification.

Before descending to the glen (Scots word for valley), we will summit the two highest peaks in the Pentlands (Carnethy Hill and Scald Law). After descending, we will hike beside two Reservoirs enjoying forested areas and the relaxing atmosphere of the water.

If you are in Edinburgh then this is an absolutely MUST do. Close to Edinburgh city, but still quiet, serene and simply spectacular. Undoubtedly, this was my best day in Edinburgh. Rob is a highly skilled and experienced mountaineer. He knows the Pentland Hills area really well, and a number of different trails in the region. He is well prepared, understands the weather very well, and also gets very regular weather updates to ensure that his group members get the be possible hiking experience. He adjusts himself very well to your pace. So you feel like you are as skilled as he is. :) He shares a good deal of information about the mountains, the history, and the geology of it. He also shares information about the different plants and grass you see in the way. This is quite enriching. The other advantage of his storytelling is that you feel like you are doing an easy hike. Overall, Rob is a great guy to go with for hiking in Pentland Hills, and in Scottish Mounains/Highlands in general. Highly recommended!
