What you'll do

This walking food tour is a throw-down between two rival smoked meat places, two bagel factories, a pastry shop and unique deli in a league of their own as well as a falafel and ice cream place! We will explore the most iconic food establishments of Montreal and the neighbourhoods that house them, following the stories of the Jewish community and the business owners as we go....plus all of the eating of course. This tour is not for the faint of heart and requires an eager tummy, nimble legs and a mind that loves story and learning and a heart that can appreciate a good poem. The food follows the development of the city, the story of industry, class and political struggle as well as the iconic "Main". Even if you are not from Montreal, you will feel nostalgic after eating these comfort foods and resurrecting history.
Other things to note
We walk 3km's (1.8 mi) on this tour so you have to be prepared to walk that distance and be dressed for the weather. We eat alot; come hungry. Notify us of any food allergies prior to the tour. The tour starts at 9:45 and not 9:30. Please come by transit or taxi not a personal vehicle.

I am the person to come to if you want to explore food in Montreal. I was a chef for years and also have a social science and history background plus I am a tour guide! I have run a food tour company called 'Round Table Tours since 2012 that explores Chinatown, craft chocolate, tea, cocktails, coffee and much more! I blend food and story together, introducing you to Montreal through tasting and meeting the people behind the food and exploring places you could never find on your own! I have also written an e-food guide to Montreal with the Gazette's dining out critic Amie Watson, and would love to show you the city! Myself, or guides Darren, Frances and Daniel guide in english french or spanish. We were the first ones in the city to run a Jewish food tour. Our guides are certified and do it with knowledge and chutzpah.

Where you'll be

We visit two surprise smoked meat places, two rival bagel factories, another diner, a pastry shop, a falafel and ice cream stop. The oldest business on the tour opened in 1928 and the most recent in 2018. We'll move from Outremont through the Mile-End and down into the Plateau. Many of the things we taste are specific to Jewish Montreal and you cannot get them anywhere else!

Wow! What an amazing experience with Melissa! We only wish that we had booked this earlier in our trip, and had time to go on more tours with her. Melissa is super knowledgeable, personable, and provides a fun mix of hardcore history and lighthearted facts. We had lots (and I mean LOTS) of amazing food and didn’t have to stand in any of the crazy lines because she has relationships with all the best spots. This tour is a great value - come hungry, ready for great food and conversation, and loads of Montreal history. Can’t recommend this tour enough. I would go on any tour with Melissa, just sad we didn’t get a chance to try out her Chinese neighborhood tour or coffee tour! Both sounded so great too!

Melissa was immediately warm and friendly and clearly is a part of the city. Her love of Montreal is obvious as is her deep interest in its history. Having a food professional guide us was great as we could discuss not just cultural history but the how and why of the food prep. She’s a natural raconteur and made sure to include us all in her discussion. She also went out of her way to ensure that we were all stuffed with amazing food. Top marks overall!
