What you'll do

Looking for a local to show you the hidden trails in Half Moon Bay? Join me for an easy 3-6 mile (5-10 kilometers) hike/walk through the redwood forest in Higgins Purisima Canyon, just 20 minutes south of Main St Half Moon Bay. We can count banana slugs and look for other animals while walking along Purisima Creek through redwood trees native only to Northern California.

After the hike we will meet in historic downtown Half Moon Bay for deli sandwiches with freshly made bread (or other food items that meet your dietary needs). We can support local businesses and socially distance while sitting in the outside garden at San Benito House. We can discuss other trails and places to eat around the area. Guests will leave with newfound friends and knowledge of all the “hidden gems” the coast has to offer. This event is great for individuals, groups, couples or families of all ages, any time of year!

Who: Anyone interested in nature, light exercise, and conversation
What: 3-6 mile (5-10k) hike/walk, easy to moderate steepness
Where: Meet at Higgins Purisima Redwood Forrest then meet at San Benito House afterwards (lunch included)
When: 12:00pm weekdays
8:30am weekends
Why: Because it’s fun getting to know people and new areas!

I also offer walks that are kid-friendly, dog-friendly, or appropriate for your level of fitness in eucalyptus or cypress trees along the coast. Just ask!

As a fellow traveler, I always enjoyed meeting people in the places I visited. The interactions made my trips memorable. I’d love to do the same by hosting people who are exploring the coastal area of Northern California. I’m enthusiastic about sharing my favorite nature spots along the coast and I enjoy connecting with people from all walks of life.

I’ve lived in Half Moon Bay since I was four years old. As a kid we used to spend our days riding bikes along the coastal trail and around our neighborhood. We ran Cross Country in the trails through the trees and along the beach. I’d love to share that with other people.

As I got older I gained experience as a camp counselor and then as a high school teacher, so I’m good at asking questions and making people feel connected to each other. Hopefully my openness will make you feel at home.

Where you'll be

The entrance to Higgins Purisima redwood forest is about 10 minutes south of HWY 92 and Main Street. Half Moon Bay is 25 miles south of San Francisco and 60 miles north of Santa Cruz on the coast. I recommend coming by car because public transportation is limited in the coast.

Rachel was such a joy. She was very honest and knowledgeable about the location. She was very conscious of the safety restriction and carried sanitizer. I appreciate the fact that Rachel was in constant contact with my sister and I requarding lunch as well as making herself avaliable for any questions that i might have. My sister and i have decided that when we go back to Half Moon Bay, we would like to do another hike with Rachel. She is such an amazing person, helpful, informative and just a breath of fresh air.

Beautiful views and a serene walk along a creek with a steep hike to a mountain top. Good exercise and a chance to connect with nature with a guide that is familiar with the terrain and the the little friends along the way.

Rachel is a lovely easy- going and fun walking guide. I was so surprised that such a cool place existed in Half Moon Bay (I grew up in the Bay Area.... eek... no excuse, really). I had been once to this park about 1.5 years ago with a friend, but not to this part/entrance, so it felt like a different place almost entirely. I was grateful that she adjusted the tour to suit me and made me feel at ease. We made a couple stops along the way to appreciate the creek, look closer at one of the many cute banana slugs ;) or take a photo, like by one of the wooden bridges. Thank you Rachel (and Rose)!!! What a lovely time to slow down and be in Nature ... hope to see you again, perhaps on your other Half Moon Bay tour!

Rachel was ON POINT!! I enjoyed my hike (I’m a novice to hiking) and felt comfortable. Rachel provided me with a beautiful experience. I felt she allowed me to keep my own pace so that I could listen to my body. As a new hiker that was important to me. Rachel also encouraged exploration on the trail as she educated me on poison oak, banana slugs, trails, conditioning, etc. It was awesome to here about her personal hiking experiences; that allowed me to take valuable information for my next hike. Rachel was very thoughtful and socially distanced as well. After the beautiful hike we enjoyed a sandwich from a local deli! ( It was to die for!!). In her words “nothing like a Higgens hike and a sandwich from San Benito House”. I can’t wait to book again!! Yup!!

Highly recommend. This experience is great for families as well as adults. Rachel is a knowledgeable and personable tour guide. I did this experiences with kids ages 17, 11, and 10 and it was a big hit with them. Rachel knows so much about the area because she was raised in Half Moon Bay. She knows all the great places to check out in the area! Lunch at San Benito House was delish and it has great outdoor accommodations.
