What you'll do

This is an easy kayak excursion suitable for beginning paddlers. The experience will last about two hours, paddling to the springs area through several different aquatic ecosystems that demonstrate how the mix of fresh water from the springs with the tidal salt water from the Gulf of Mexico affects the different types of plants. A variety of wildlife will be seen, including a host of waterfowl - osprey, egrets, white ibis, wood stork, great and little blue heron, and possibly roseate spoonbill. If we're lucky, we'll see one of the Park's resident bald eagles flying overhead. Be sure to bring your camera. The history of the area, dating back to its use as a salt works during the Civil War, will be described. We'll float above the opening to Salt Spring, which is one of the deepest springs in Florida, explored to a depth of 320 feet. The exact itinerary and route may be modified to accommodate the abilities of our guests. Time permitting, more advanced paddlers may be able to tour additional areas.

Paul

I'm an experienced paddler, a past-president of the Salt Springs Alliance Citizen Support Organization, and a member of the Florida Paddling Trails Association. I've spent countless hours in the State Park paddling into every nook and cranny, and have led kayak trips for Salt Springs Alliance. To help people discover and explore Florida's beautiful Nature Coast I also host http://FloridaNatureCoast.org ... a website for adventurers and tourists. I've also placed a series of geocaches along the route we will follow. So if you're a geocacher, we can include that as part of the experience.
